@HalHaneyArt They did see something with Foley main eventing vs Vader at HH 93, Austin was scheduled to work with Flair at Starrcade 93 before Sid scissors. They both were going to get depushed w Hogan arrival. Beefcake main eventing Starcade the nail in all coffins

Hard to believe early 90s WCW didn’t know what they had with either of these guys, Taker, Foley, Nash, HHH, Austin, and the list goes on and on. Wild shit.

@elliottswrstlin No love for Bret/Owen vs Steiners? I saw the Bret/Perfect vs Razor/Lex tag a few days later in Cleveland. Very memorable finish

Top 10 WWF Tag matches of the 90s. Didn't include any multi person matches otherwise Canadian Stampede and Piper & Bushwackers vs Nasty Boys & Mountie 2/17/92 would've made the top 10.

They didnt have two many matches, but Bret and Dibiase is like when you are painting and you mix the colours and what comes out is perfect in what you were looking for. Arn and Bret had that same one off chemistry at SummerSlam 89 as well. Their offense and selling clicked.

@TrevorDame Many great points in here.fair to say AEW isn’t as culturally relevant as WCW at its peak ? Looking at ppv buyrates , the nitros in domes , wcw/nwo revenge being one of the best selling n64 games . Those who lived thru it all can attest to how big it was in pop culture v AEW now

Looking at how insane a business ride Nitro was during its existence really makes AEW's run during the same span of time seem impressively stable. I'm gonna ramble heeere in a thread.

@elliottswrstlin Can you give us a list of this based on era? Completely agree. Lot of guys who were washing during MNW era, but then watch earlier stuff and better than I recall. Duggan, Honky Tonk, Barbarian among others

Can confirm Paul Roma was good. Power and Glory and especially Pretty Wonderful were great teams. A lot of pro wrestling conventional wisdom deserves re-thinking. I've seen so many guys written off bad who were great pro wrestlers!

@TheRajGiri I respect Dave and his historical knowledge is insane (reading 89 yearbook now). I feel like him constantly defending the AEW ratings & being dismissive of watching older wrestling is really hurting his rep

In 2023, CW averaged 453K viewers compared to 786K viewers for TBS. If you take out wrestling from the TBS tally, it's still way ahead of CW. And Dynamite has a major advantage with the BBT lead-in. I think anyone taking a realistic look at the ratings before NXT went to CW and after can see that there wasn't a meaningful shift either way for NXT, they're doing the same, it's just AEW is doing a lot less. Arguing over semantics seems like a waste of time. The reality is NXT is about even from where they were 6 months ago, AEW is way down. NXT started gaining and overtaking AEW in total viewers in June (when they were on USA), and because of AEW's continued decline, NXT is now routinely beating them in P2. In 18-49, AEW still has the edge but it's now very close, and if the trajectory doesn't change, NXT will start winning consistently in the demo sooner than later.
Dave Meltzer@davemeltzerWON

So you didn't see the issue where I noted that the USA average in prime time taking out wrestling was 299,000?

After getting a raise from a desperate WBD to produce a product nobody cares about rn, Tony Khan can jumpstart AEW's momentum by hiring an Elite Co-Incel as AEW's Secretary of Social Media. One who can help AEW comment their way to the top. Vote Bix.
