Yet, as a society, we too often fail to understand these sacrifices with the depth, humanity, and gratitude they deserve. In Oromo political culture, we sometimes celebrate heroes in slogans and speeches while overlooking the pain endured by their families and children. We fail to pause and ask what it meant for a child to grow up without the normal family warmth, stability, and presence of a parent. We rarely recognize that liberation movements are carried not only by fighters and leaders, but also by spouses, sons, and daughters who silently sacrifice parts of their own lives for the future of their people. Huriya’s story is therefore not merely a personal story. It is a mirror reflecting the hidden sacrifices carried within the Oromo struggle. It reminds us that a nation which fails to honor and understand sacrifice in deeply human terms gradually becomes emotionally disconnected from its own history, its own people, and its own moral foundation. Over time, such emotional disconnection weakens mutual loyalty, shared responsibility, and collective memory, the very essence of what gives a nation its soul, cohesion, and enduring strength.
