Good News: Restoration of the Historic Bala Hissar of Kabul Completed The approximately 1,500-year-old historic Bala Hissar of Kabul has been restored in a standardized and conservation-oriented manner by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Bala Hissar is one of the oldest and most significant historical sites in Kabul, situated on an உயர hill in the southern part of the city. Over the centuries, this fortress has served as a central locus of political authority, military strategy, and conflict under successive regimes. The origins of Bala Hissar date back at least to the medieval period, although many historians argue that the site is considerably older. During the reign of Zahir-ud-Din Muhammad Babur, the fortress held particular strategic importance. It later continued to function as a key seat of power during the era of Ahmad Shah Durrani. In the 19th century, Bala Hissar witnessed intense military engagements during both the First Anglo-Afghan War and the Second Anglo-Afghan War, resulting in significant structural damage to large sections of the complex.
