Sorry if its long thread, but I need to express how I feel, because as Aerith fan, I feel little sad 🥺🥹😔 Is it fair that Aerith went on the journey with Cid and Vincent in the original game, but now she’s completely absent just because the mystery of whether she dies or not is being used as bait to generate interest and get people talking about the game? When I watched the promotional trailer, it didn’t seem like anyone was affected by Aerith’s absence except Cloud (and even his reaction might now depend on the player’s choices). I don’t want to be negative, but it looks to me like Aerith won’t have a strong presence in the final part of the game. She might just appear at the end to save the planet, and I don’t want that for her. I want her long suffering to have real meaning, for her absence to have meaning, and for her to have a strong presence as a heroine in the game itself, not just on the cover. I’m tired of her being used as a tool to spark questions and theories. I want Aerith to be present in the third part as a playable character and a full member of the party.

THE SEALING OF HEAVEN Once upon a time, the boundaries between the spiritual and mortal worlds were blurred. Everyone could communicate to the spirits. Then the Shang Kings "sealed the skies" and spiritual silence fell over what we today call China. "Jue Di Tian Tong" (絕地天通) is seen as a moment not of loss, but of order emerging from chaos. Earthly and heavenly affairs are now separate, with the exception of the Shang King and his priests. This was when we first emerged from the state of "hybridity" (雜糅) and man no longer confused himself with gods. The Shang weren't the only tribe in China. Just the only one who could talk to Shangdi or the most powerful spirit. If you read modern Chinese, it's not impossible to decipher what the Shang Kings and their priests carved on the oracle bones they used for divination. However, the Shang is not really considered Chinese yet. They were primitive. Almost a little Aztec. They owned slaves and probably performed ritual human sacrifices. When the Zhou kings defeated the Shang, it was so militarily trivial it almost took them by surprise. It's been hundreds of years since the sealing of the skies and the Zhou kings weren't quite bold enough to say "OK well now WE have the line to Shangdi" Instead, they introduced the idea of "Tian." God just became impersonal. Passive. You can't personalize Tian like a old man in the sky. It is a word that literally means "sky." Oracle bone divination didn't stop right away, but fell off under the long centuries under the rule of the Zhou kings. Like the Shang kings, they were not the only kings in China, just the ones who had the mandate of Tian. And what is Tian exactly? "Heaven sees as the people se; Heaven hears as the people hear." Slowly by slowly, the ruler sought his legitimacy less through that direct connection to the spirit realm and more through winning the hearts and minds of the people. The loss of popular support soon became interpreted as the loss of the mandate of heaven. Thinkers like Mencius made the connection explicit. And Confucius warned...stay away from gods and ghosts. So this was the conversation I had with William Han @W_T_Han earlier. Basically that Zhou psyop from 3,000 years ago created the concept of "all under heaven" or Tianxia. Under that worldview, there is always only one legitimate Son of Heaven ruling the civilized realm. Multiple kings ruling separate states is therefore abnormal or temporary. When the Zhou fell apart during the warring states period, the competing states did not imagine permanent co-existence like European nation-states. Each state aimed to become the unifier of the entire civilized sphere...the new Zhou. This ambition culminated in the Qin dynasty in 221 BCE. It fell apart just decades afterwards, but the ideological backdrop was set: All under heaven, long divided, must unite. Long united, must divide. This cyclical narrative has played out again and again in Chinese history forever more. Now it's not as if religion never again played a role in Chinese history. Far from it. The Ming dynasty, for instance, rose on the backs of an intriguing syncretic religion blending the heretical buddhism of the White Lotus cult with Zoroastrianism of all things. Get it? Ming? "Bright"? Fire? But as soon as the first Ming emperor got his ass sat on the dragon throne, what did he do? He banned the religion that brought him to power. Sealing the sky yet again...just like the first Shang kings.
