⚡️ New LBNL article out on interregional electric transmission ⚡️ We explore how interregional transmission has been operated in the U.S. (2014 – 2023) by tracking interregional trade and market prices. Open access, in The Energy Journal: doi.org/10.1177/019565… 🧵 👇️

The team that wrote the magisterial study below has produced an update. As usual, lots of good stuff - with a conclusion that electricity prices are only starting to see an uptick. But everything about the environment is flashing red lights! Like this slide, downright scary:

The @LBNL & @TheBrattleGroup teams have an excellent study out this week on what's feeding electricity price changes over the past 5 years. Legislators should be required to read or get a briefing on it before taking any vote on electricity policy! Highlights & my commentary🧵

Great work here by LBNL. Interregional tx has clear economic value, but a sizeable portion of this value is not captured because of inefficiencies due to market rules. Efforts at improvement like SPP's inter-market optimization are promising, looking forward to working on them.

@mattyglesias You should check out some of our previous work doing these types of comparisons more systematically! #Abs1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">nature.com/articles/s4146…

The study covers approximately 50 GW of transfer capacity, roughly 60% of national transfer capacity. The sample suggests that the potential savings would be potentially much larger if changes were implemented nation-wide.

From @BerkleyLab, one of the most useful decks you’ll see this year. Retail electricity prices don’t rise or fall for a single reason. What pushes them up: natural gas price spikes, extreme weather and wildfire recovery, and the cost of hardening aging grid infrastructure. What pulls them down: market-based wind and solar, which in some states lowered retail prices by roughly 0.5¢/kWh and load growth 👉 Much more context in the link in the comments.

@TKavulla describes a great new study on electricity prices. Most newspaper articles on rising electricity prices are bad. Read the LBNL/Brattle Group study instead.

One of the key outcomes of peer review was to think more about how storage degradation might impact the calculus of the above findings. You'll have to download the full paper to find out! 🙂 sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
