Meet Johan Ferreira Sr., the schoolteacher who built one of Southern Africa’s biggest bus companies. Born in 1934, he spent 18 years teaching in Namibia before taking a leap of faith in 1971. With just one bus, he launched Central Bus Service. Within five years, the fleet had grown to five buses and the company became Windhoek Bus Service. In 1979, he started Intercape in Cape Town, initially operating a simple airport shuttle. By 1986, the company had expanded into long-distance travel, and his son, Johann Ferreira Jr., joined the business. In 2008, Johann Ferreira Jr. acquired full ownership of Intercape and continued growing the company into a trusted transport brand across Southern Africa. Today, Intercape operates a fleet of 230 coaches, connecting thousands of passengers with safe, reliable and affordable travel every day.
