@thecollegehill The mailing list was named after the comp: the Vice article in this thread says it was ‘designed for people to discuss Warp’s 1992 Artificial Intelligence compilation.’ And ‘listening music’ doesn’t contradict what I said; it’s music made by artificial intelligence, for listening

@will_lne the term "IDM" didn't come from the compilation though, it came from the mailing list the second Warp compilation had nothing to do with intelligent computers but it did reference the email list Warp themselves called the first comp "listening music" and emphasized its humanity

The ‘IDM’ genre name gets a little less insufferable when you realize it came from Warp Records’ Artificial Intelligence compilation and refers to computers being intelligent rather than the music itself.

@thecollegehill The comp is called Artificial Intelligence: the computer is the intelligence. Warp subtitled it ‘Electronic Listening Music.’ Whether people reinterpreted ‘intelligent’ to describe the music doesn’t change where the name came from, which is all I said.
