It’s not just new, it’s newspeak

Everyone always wants to argue about eng productivity metrics but the truth is much simpler than the debates: we care about being able to take an idea and make it reality. Faster, safer, and with more capabilities. Theres many metrics that can measure that and it’s not an actually that important which you choose. As long as you’re honest about what that metric means and you’re accountable to the overarching goal it works fine. For me that metric is often something akin to commits, for others it might be releases, or cycle time, and for some it might be net lines. It might even change over time. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be valuable.

Claude Code wiped our production database with a Terraform command. It took down the DataTalksClub course platform and 2.5 years of submissions: homework, projects, and leaderboards. Automated snapshots were gone too. In the newsletter, I wrote the full timeline + what I changed so this doesn't happen again. If you use Terraform (or let agents touch infra), this is a good story for you to read. alexeyondata.substack.com/p/how-i-droppe…
