All this is of coarse in the context that you are talking with a rational and mentally sound person. Obviously if you are speaking with someone who does not have the capacity to have a respectful and mature conversation then this won’t really matter. Good luck

“I disagree” is not the same as “you’re wrong” Likelihood you will be having some tough conversations/debates with people you care about in your life. Here’s something that might help.

That can sound like the following: ⁃Let’s find out why we disagree ⁃What makes you believe I’m wrong ⁃Here is what I’ve found supports my stance. ⁃You’re welcome to your opinion but asserting it does not help us find common ground which is what I hope we can do here

When listening We can always expect people to have the same standard of debate etiquette as we do so when we hear people say a “you’re wrong” statements it’s a good practice for us to reframe them in our mind to a “I disagree” statement for them.

“You’re wrong” wrong statement: ⁃that’s not true ⁃you can’t really believe that ⁃you don’t know what your talking about ⁃that’s not a reliable source [alternative would be asking to explore a different source for same info]

“I disagree” statements: ⁃I read something different. ⁃That seems to contradict (insert info here). ⁃that doesn’t make sense to me, can you explain it differently or share the source of this info. ⁃I have a problem with that info because of (insert reason)

When speaking- “I disagree” invites the question “why” which creates opportunity to share information you believe they are missing. “You’re wrong” asserts an opinion and warrants the response “no I am not” which defaults the conversation to defense status.

Discerning the difference when you speak (obviously taking tone into consideration) and when you listen will help you manage feelings and increase chances of diplomacy.
