IF I WERE MADE THE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA.....
Here’s a yearly breakdown for a my 4-year tenure.
YEAR 1: STABILIZE & SIGNAL
- SECURITY: Overhaul intelligence coordination. Launch targeted operations against banditry, oil theft, and terrorism. Community police.
Reform police and military with better pay + accountability.
Cyber bully should be revised from criminal to civil matter.
- ECONOMY: End FX arbitrage. Float/unify exchange rates to attract FDI and stop round-tripping. Clear subsidy backlog transparently and redirect savings to transport and health palliatives.
- POWER: Declare state of emergency on power. Fast-track gas supply to existing plants. Settle legacy debts to GenCos/DisCos to unlock 2,000+MW idle capacity. Additional 5,000 MW is added to the National Grid.
Reduction Electricity Tariff by 50% via subsidy.
End Bands Grouping and estimated billing.
Free prepaid metering sponsored by both state and FG.
- TRUST: Asset declaration + open contracting. Prosecute to closure at least 3 high-profile corruption cases to signal a break from business-as-usual.
- REVENUE: Widen tax net using NIN/BVN data. No new taxes, just better collection.
YEAR 2: STRUCTURAL REFORMS
- RESTRUCTURE: Push constitutional amendments to devolve security, electricity, seaports , rail and resources control to states. True fiscal federalism starts here.
- AGRICULTURE: Secure major farming belts. Launch mechanization + input financing with private firms. Aim for food inflation to drop below 15%.
- MANUFACTURING: Stable FX + power makes import substitution real. Give tax holidays for factories in gas corridors and export processing zones.
- EDUCATION/HEALTH*: Revamp 1 primary healthcare center per ward to world-class standard with solar panels and well staffed. Increment of salary of Medical staff by 200%
Scholarship schemes for students with strong academic standing in all public tertiary institutions.
Classrooms/ lecture theatres/hostels will be upgraded to World Class.
Increment in the Salaries of all Teachers & lecturers in public schools by 200%.
- OIL & GAS/ MINERAL: Pass clear PIA regulations. End crude swaps. Attract majors back to deep water with fiscal certainty.
Ensure at Warri and Port Harcourt refineries are functioning optimally.
Solid Minerals would be exported as finished products not as raw materials.
State owned Steel companies will be established.
YEAR 3: SCALE & JOBS
- INFRASTRUCTURE: Commission major rails, ports, and at least 10,000km rural roads. Use PPPs, not just budget. Aim for 20hrs/day power in all industrial clusters.
- DIGITAL ECONOMY: 95% NIN/BVN coverage + nationwide fiber. Push CBN to license more fintechs and make Nigeria Africa’s digital payments hub.
- YOUTH JOBS: Scale tech/skills free training to 2M youths. Link govt procurement to SME quotas. Make it easy to start a business in 24hrs.
- EXPORTS: Push non-oil exports: cocoa, cashew, solid minerals, creative industry. Goal: non-oil exports hit 25% of total.
- DEBT: Refinance expensive domestic debt. Keep debt service <40% of revenue.
YEAR 4: CONSOLIDATE & INSTITUTIONALIZE
- INSTITUTIONS: Insulate INEC, EFCC, Judiciary funding from executive. Make reforms irreversible.
- SOCIAL PROTECTION: Launch national ID-linked cash transfers for poorest 10M households. Phase out ad-hoc palliatives.
- GROWTH: Target 6%+ GDP growth with inflation <10%. GDP per capita should rise 25%+ vs Year 1.
-LEGACY PROJECTS: Complete signature projects: national carrier, super grid, special agro-zones. Hand over with full transparency.
*KEY PRINCIPLES ACROSS ALL 4 YEARS:
1. SEQUENCE MATTERS- No reforms without security and FX stability first
2. STATES ARE PARTNERS - Abuja can’t do it alone; devolve power + revenue
3. MEASURE AND EVALUATE EVERYTHING- Publish quarterly dashboards on power, inflation, jobs, revenue
4. COMMUNICATE CONSTANTLY- Nigerians tolerate pain if they see a plan
