@zarahandley @GarryLavin Stragglethorpe derives from three words which describs its role in the parish of Beckingham, namely : Stag & Garth & Thorpe.

@GarryLavin It is in South Lincolnshire, close to Nottinghamshire

@zarahandley @GarryLavin .....its to the North of Grantham, while you're there it would be well worthwhile in visiting nearby Stragglethorpe, with its simple, part Saxon Chapel of Ease, with some extraordinary features...

Join us this weekend as we are milling!
Today, we will be milling Spelt flour, this is from an older grain which is low in gluten.
On Sunday we will be milling our signature white and wholemeal flour for our monthly Milling Day!

The MPGA Elms4London Campaign is progressing well with almost three quarters of the tree stock already allocated. This means we still have 50 elm trees. Applications should be made via the email address on the website, elms4london.org.uk, before the January 10th 2025.

@sarah_go_green .....incredible gray and overcast weather in this part of Lincolnshire has lead to almost complete lack of output from my solar array on south facing roof. For the first 5 days of this month only 6.8 KWhrs produced - and over the last 7 days the figure is 8.23 !!

⭐️ Sunday read: ‘It happened again in York. I was wandering through Holy Trinity minding my own business, when a glance at a shadowy tower wall revealed the fragment of a dragon carved in the Scandinavian tradition.’

Remnants of timber-framing on the Wentworth Estate, South Yorkshire.

Many medieval half timbered building still survive just below the surface of a later development. Skinning around existing buildings appears to have been common practice from farm cottages to larger manor houses, here work has been undertaken to conserve one such example at FWE

@clareacrayner @peterjshallcro2 .....also never underestimate the local deer, they'll eat off the new growth above the tube if they are able. Also I have known them lift the tube with their nose and strip the bark off the sapling. youtu.be/m_g90BGU90g

@clareacrayner @peterjshallcro2 Pleased to see your success with Ademuz, watering hasn't been necessary this year. However, I try to keep approx one sq, m clear of vegetation for the first few years as this reduces competition for water and nutrients leading to greater sapling growth.

@DanielBPopulus Had a brief chat with the owner of a timber mill & yard south of Grantham a few years ago, he reckoned he could tell the different varieties from each other when he was processing them, must get back to him and quizz him more on his knowledge......
English

@DanielBPopulus Thanks for your enquiry, it looks like the hybrid cultivar "Vegata" or Huntingdon elm. I have to tell you, if you didn't already know, that elm tree identification is an absolute minefield and I'm not sufficiently knowledgable to give advice. I always ask Peter Bourne at Brighton

@antiquariananon @arborlowenviron The Priory was endowed with a considerable amount of land around South Lincolnshire, much of which was farmed as outlying Granges, including some land at Stragglethorpe. Has anyone seen or translated the account of the Priory's wealth, ordered by Henry VIII in 1535 ??
English

@arborlowenviron None at all - the village was lost when the monastery was dissolved. The settlement in the parish is at Pointon, which is a mile and a half south.

@the_beeguy @ElmTreeBees @PontsHoney This is a European Hornet, taken yesterday. They're a native insect, part of the natural fauna. I've had nests on the farm before, in hollow oak trees. I've seen this one enter the crack in the garden wall coping stones. Should I leave them ?
