@ChrisGiles_ This is a silly argument. Progressive tax is increased tax % based on what you earn. Student loans are based on how much your family could afford to pay upfront and affects people in certain career paths way more than others. Different things

@cricketontnt Please can you remove the score from showing whilst the highlights are playing? I'm sure lots of people are getting up for the lunch or tea highlights not wanting to know the score. Real spoiler this morning.

@willwilberfoss Current 4+ pass rate for Maths & English is 65%. We can definitely do better than that. At least 90+ in mainstream schools. Best schools do it without affecting behaviour & attendance. “What can we learn from them?” is the question we should all be asking.

Yes, underachievers should do more work because that’s how you get better. Why on earth does this need explaining in 2025?! If we aim to make lessons ‘likeable’ by changing the *content*, we are confining those we purport to help to a curriculum limited to existing interests.😔

Ministers are facing union pressure to make the curriculum more enjoyable for disadvantaged pupils after figures showed that school suspensions and expulsions have reached a record high ⬇️ thetimes.com/uk/education/a…

@MattJones_Globe But what do you mean by dumbed down? Surely the implication here is that students should have the chance to study contact which is relevant and engaging and allows them to succeed through applying their strengths. Saying this is "dumbing down" is pejorative.

@ianwhite21 The issue here is your use of the word "rigorous". The article discusses variety in the curriculum. Creative subjects can be very rigorous. Whatever socioeconomic background, a child is more likely to misbehave or not attend if the curriculum is narrow and dull.

@AaronBastani This is why use of the term "HMO" leaves a lot to be desired. Three unrelated nurses sharing a 3 bed terraced house is technically an HMO and has as many restrictions on it as 4 bed converted to accommodate 12 people...

I live between two HMOs. Tenants include nurses and teachers. You’ve no idea what you’re talking about.
J Bagger@JBagger4

@AaronBastani Who are these residents? Did they arrive legally? No they did not. Are they in any census? No they are not, Does their presence cause purchasing power to decrease? Yes it does.

Another thing to be clear about ahead of the Budget on Oct 30: it’s not only spending cuts that are unacceptable. After years of falling real wages it’s also unacceptable to demand the majority of people pay more in tax. No to cuts - tax the rich.

@michaeljswalker Thing is, it's not even that. This whole "efficiency" thing is a bit misleading. In 2019 tories were popular. In 2024 they were not. I don't think Labour actually did anything to make their votes more efficient. They just benefitted from collapse of tory and snp

Labour getting a lower vote share than 2019 obviously doesn’t make this a worse result, obviously. It does though make it seem particularly unfair that 2019 led to a consensus that the Corbyn movement were all freaks and weirdos with nothing to say to the country.

Jon ashworth must feel so awful, every group chat he’s in is celebrating and his head must be on Mars. He’s probably sat there spiralling, the occasional “condolences” from colleagues who are drunk and will forget about him by the end of the day.

@OwenJones84 I would think Bristol East at 30% to Labour's 45% was strongest... Particularly given the level of activist base and party infrastructure in Bristol.

Does anyone know how many seats the Greens came second behind Labour? I had it down as 45, but can't find the source. Also, does anyone have a list of where they did best in second place? Thanks!
