@timatkin Thanks for this @timatkin! I don’t have that one, but do have several others from that era and just after with recipes to make various styles. This one is remarkably specific!

We think wine fakes are something new. This book, published in 1899, tells people how to make fake Lafite, among other things. #winefraud

@omnivorebooks If you are the imbibing sort, then you can sub drinking Champagne as an accompaniment. Acid (and bubbles) balance and cut the fat. Or use both!

One cooking idea Chris Scott mentioned today was sprinkling lemon zest on just-fried chicken. The acid balances and cuts the fat.

More wine publishing news as @hawk_wakawaka departs her role amid restructuring detailed in adweek.com/media/recurren… Wishing Elaine the best seems unnecessary as we know she is the best at the type of work she does. Instead, will say: looking forward to your next ventures!

@deathbybadger @Sotherans I knew there were secrets! Arcane and esoteric knowledge is part of why I went into the wine trade. Wondering how similar some aspects of rare books and wine are. Time for a tome so I can find out!

Today’s #bookmail contained a special treat from the UK. Visited ⁦@Sotherans⁩ often on trips to London. Been awaiting ⁦@deathbybadger⁩ writings about what I believe to be my dream job. Cannot wait to read his account of the rare book trade!

@arkhamlibrarian How would one even search for this? I am impressed with the find, however you arrived at it. As a sci-fi fan and preacher’s son who grew up in the Satanic panic, it is intriguing.

@pangalactic Not sure if you have experimented with local wines, but with your posts of Spanish/Italian wines some of the Turkish reds could be of interest. The Öküzgözü-Boğazkere blends are classics for the country. Enjoyed discovering more of them when I was there.

@pangalactic Not excusing poor wine service. Offering modifier. Turkey has a climate where wine storage an issue, and heat kills wine. Easier to warm than chill. But, frigid temps can cover flaws and sometimes bring out astringency in that style. Neither ideal, but cold better than hot.

@danielbowmanjr Agreeing with others: Babette’s Feast. Several of the “food movies” have a soulful gentleness about them, but this is the one that set the standard for me.

I’m so touched and grateful for these delightful new acquisitions generously sent by @winejames. I seriously cannot think of a more enticing tagline than “The Peyton Place of the Publishing Industry.” #DailyPaperback

“Catalán aficionado serenely contemplates a glass porrón full of his favorite wine.” Possibly my new favorite wine photo (noted as by Dick Frisell) in Adventures in Taste courtesy of today’s #bookmail from @omnivorebooks

Spent way way WAY too much time looking for this. Finding a book in my house is beyond needle in haystack. I’m working on revising my essay about women in the paperback publishing industry.

@PhilipReedman @PigottRiesling @robertjoseph @jamiegoode For an idea of adoption timeline, the UK Guild of Sommeliers (which pre-dated CMS) did not use the terms in an early 1970’s exam syllabus. The organization’s Wine-Butler magazine was using New World in articles by early ‘8o’s.

@robertjoseph @jamiegoode and everyone. I am desperately trying to find out when #NewWorldWine became a term applied not only to the wines of the Americas, but also those from other continents. I can find no evidence of latter meaning until the 1980s. Did I miss something?
