Rivian lost $13.8 billion in three years. Today they announced a robotaxi. The partner rotation is the business model at this point. Amazon: $1.3B equity plus 100K van order. VW: $5.8B joint venture. US DOE: $6.6B loan. Uber: $1.25B robotaxi deal. Every 12 to 18 months, a new institution writes a check large enough to fund the next chapter. The $1.25B headline is misleading. Uber commits $300 million now. The remaining $950 million is gated behind “autonomous milestones” by unspecified dates through 2031. That’s not a conviction bet on Rivian’s autonomy. That’s a call option priced at $300 million with five years of expiry. Look at Uber’s last 18 months. Waymo rides on the platform. Zoox in Las Vegas this year, LA in 2027. 20,000 Lucid vehicles with Nuro’s autonomy stack. Now Rivian. Every autonomy architecture covered. Camera-only, lidar-first, purpose-built pods, OEM conversions. Uber is building a portfolio of bets so that they win regardless of which stack reaches scale first. Rivian thinks they signed a partnership. Uber signed a hedge. The R2 that this entire deal depends on launches this spring at $57,990. The $45,000 version? Late 2027. The version with lidar and the Gen 3 chip that actually enables robotaxi-grade perception? Late 2026 at the earliest. The robotaxi fleet in San Francisco and Miami? 2028. The Georgia factory for scale production? Still under construction. Waymo is running fully driverless rides across San Francisco, Phoenix, and LA right now. No milestones to hit. No factory to build. No vehicle to finish designing. Rivian needs the product, the factory, the software, and the autonomous driving system to all work simultaneously three years from now. Uber’s smartest move in the last decade was selling its own self-driving unit for a $4 billion loss. Its second smartest is buying call options on everyone else’s.

$F spent ~$20 Billion to build the F150 Lightning, then gave up on it and took a $20 Billion write-down of impairment. Ford has spent ~$40 Billion on EVs so far. It's estimated that traditional car companies have invested more than $100 Billion on EVs with little to nothing to show for it. What that tells you is that building a compelling EV is difficult and extremely expensive. There has only been one major car company, $TSLA, that has done it profitably so far. The question remains, will there be a 2nd? My bet is that yes, there will be a 2nd US-based profitable EV company, and it will be $RIVN. BUT, that's not why I'm investing in Rivian. The reasons I'm investing in Rivian is because: 1) Today, you can buy ALL of Rivian for just $19 Billion! The ENTIRE company! That's less than Ford spent on just 1 vehicle! And instead of 1 Vehicle. And instead of 1 vehicle, you get 4 vehicles: - R1T -> award-winning EV Truck - R1S -> best selling luxury EV SUV - EDV -> #1 EV Delivery Van - R2 -> The New ~$50K mass-market vehicle 2) Unlike Ford and virtually all other traditional car-makers, Rivian EVs contain in-house technology for electronics, battery, software and self-driving. These investments make for far superior vehicles that are largely software-upgradeable, and even make the cost of the vehicles cheaper to produce as the volume of production goes up. Only Rivian and Tesla have taken this "full-stack" approach to building their vehicles. 3) Besides getting 4 vehicles for the $19 Billion price-tag, you also get: - 97 Rivian Service Centers - 36 Rivian Showrooms - 141 Rivian Fast-Charging Stations with 900+ stalls Despite how long it takes to build such infrastructure, that literally nobody other than Tesla has, you get all of that for free, included in the $19 Billion price tag. 4) Also included in the $19 Billion price tage, you also get ~$6 Billion of cash for operations (which includes ~$4 Billions of debt, so ~$2 Billion net cash). An additional $2 Billion of investment coming in 2026 from VW will also add to the cash (and will likely increase the market cap). 5) Rivian has spent over $25 Billion and 16+ years to get to where its at. So the barrier to entry is INCREDIBLY hard. Lots of dead EV startups. Despite this, and the fact that Rivian is finally on the verge of explosion, the whole company is priced at just $19 Billion! So when I look at Rivian holistically, and see what I get for a $19 Billion price tag, I absolutely love what I see. This is how I view investments. I look at is from the perspective of "If I had $19 Billion to buy the whole thing, is it a good deal?" and if the answer is "yes!" then buying part of it is just as good of a deal, maybe better, because you also get @RJScaringe to run it for you!

12V battery alerts popped up on my R1T. It is 4 years old so it seems to be on the low end of 12V typical life but these trucks do have a lot of accessory loads etc. It actually popped up right after I picked my truck up from service for a separate issue that prevented the truck from DC Fast Charging. Anyway, I followed the prompts in the app and called Rivian Service, 12 minutes later I’m scheduled for an appointment. Would have preferred for this to have been done in the app rather than wait for someone to manually type in concerns that are exclusively limited to the warning the truck gave me. The appointment is currently scheduled in 3 weeks time. I’m driving by the service center later today ahead of some upcoming travel so I asked if it’s possible to exchange the 12V this afternoon rather than risking the truck dying over the next 3 weeks. We’ll see! I know Rivian has a service scheduling function in the app, just wish they’d leverage that a bit more to catch up to the Tesla experience ⚡️

After a four year relationship with @Rivian I had my doubts about the company and many choices they are making. But this week I had my R1T Dual serviced at Knightdale, NC for various items (pictured is a loaner) and I have had the most amazing customer service experience over the last several years. My service advisor kept me abreast of everything going on each and every day. The service technician met me during the appointment, took the time to understand my concerns. Even wrote me a thank you card. I am blown away by such attention. Thank you Rivian Knightdale NC for this experience. Mb.

The wait is almost over. The first R2 variant, featuring dual motors and all-wheel drive, launches this spring. We’ll be sharing full details—pricing, options and more—on March 12.
