I am tired of people in Western countries saying "Palestine is on the ballot" in your local elections. No—it is not. What is on the ballot: trash collections, social care, local jobs, economic growth, energy, etc. Palestine/Israel is a problem for Palestinians and Israelis,

Tidal wave of applications for this year's @CPSThinkTank internship programme a perfect case study for the big macro trends - elite overproduction, hideous youth unemployment and the rise of LLMs.

What struck me is how we are living in two totally different worlds, even when only living feet apart. There's a Britain, a London, that lives entirely within the belly of the state, and another for whom it barely exists except as an extractrive force.

“Most people don't know that Jesus is a beloved figure in Islam. He's mentioned by name more times than Muhammad is mentioned in the Quran.” Filmmaker Alex Kronemer speaks with @mehdirhasan about his docudrama project, portraying Jesus as he is understood in Islamic tradition.

@joeroganhq Instagram, Bluesky, Threads & Facebook are still in totally insular dystopian complex There are hardly any profound ideas, debates or discussions occurring in these apps, they are just platforms to sell products now

@HeracleanVision It's very difficult line to walk as it is and what makes it even more difficult is the presence of isolationist and separatist political parties and sentiments held by a substantial portion of first/second generation immigrants

Reflecting on this, I think we do have to grapple seriously with the question of how to handle immigrant-descended populations given political constraints that mean that any reversal of mass migration will be very much incomplete. It's all well and good to say that assimilation is meaningless, and obviously that is partly true (especially if there is not a national supermajority into which people can assimilate). Nevertheless, whatever one wants to say about the Britishness of Ainsely Harriot etc, there are obviously better and worse forms of acculturation we could plausibly generate. I understand, then, why Kruger is so eager to hold the door open to this possibility, which does require some attitude of generosity towards the kind of membership in the nation that descendants of immigrants might be able to seek. Nevertheless, the framing that such people are "equal inheritors" to our tradition - whatever the caveats offered, and they are meaningful - is always going to strike ancestral Brits the wrong way, and for that reason is probably not politically sustainable. It's a very difficult line to walk, because any political leadership which seeks to resolve this question must reassure ancestral Brits that their special claim to the nation is understood and respected, but must also hold out a hand as national leaders if we are to avoid socially dysfunctional segregation. I don't have any solutions yet, but the problem requires much more thinking.
