“I longed to be part of these conversations, to offer my own tale of triumph, to sagely weigh in on others’ dilemmas. Instead, I stood to the side, quiet, fiddling with my razr flip phone.” from “Praying I Wouldn’t Be Last” by Maya Afilalo @m_afil newohioreview.org/2023/11/12/pra…

@mattyglesias That could be said, and has been said, about every piece of art ever. I mean why is Moby Dick interesting or important? No one thought it was when it came out. If it is interesting and important to the artist, that's enough. The question then is do they pull it off?

Was genuinely flummoxed by Maestro — talented people clearly put a lot of hard work into this but … why? What is this about? Why do they think this story is interesting or important? letterboxd.com/myglesias/film…

One of my final pieces for Vox (😢) is about PAIN HUSTLERS, ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED, and Hollywood's struggle to figure out what the story of America's opioid crisis really is. vox.com/culture/239507…

Ron Charles getting fierce: I want to be swept away by this beautiful and profound metaphysical insight, but how is it that we’ve traveled back in time 400 years only to find a young woman ready to graduate from Reed College with a double major in ecofeminism and Native studies?

Born To Run. To say that this record changed my life would be a massive understatement. It wasn’t just a great rock n roll record to me. The album and the song sparked something inside of me and made me want to do something. Anything. It made me want to be somebody different than the mixed up lonely kid listening to it in the dark. It fired my imagination. I was a fifteen year old misfit with bad skin and I was going to buy a guitar and learn how to make it talk. I wanted to case the promised land in a suicide machine. As soon as I got my learners permit. I wanted to want someone and love someone so much that I would be willing to die with them on the streets tonight in an everlasting kiss. I still want that. Now I’m 64 and I’m scared and I’m thinking that maybe we ain’t that young anymore. Fuck that. I’m going to play Born To Run today and remember... luv je Born To Run released August 25 1975

@Taniel Mercado la Paloma. A warehouse full of taco stands by USC, one of which has a Michelin star. Get the grilled octopus taco. The only place in L A I still dream about.

Ok, I only have two meals left in my Los Angeles trip. What’s your biggest recommendation of a spot you crave to absolutely hit (and the more random the better)?

@MattZeitlin That is absolutely it. It keeps them in their slot. In the past justices evolved, Blackman, White, Feankfurter, even Brennan, some went right some went left, but they were able to follow where the law led them. But Thomas And Alito and Scalia have been paid to stay in their lane.

Obviously the ignorance of Paul Singer’s role in the Argentina v NML case is goofy, but I still think what’s going on with this flow of perks to the most conservative justices is keeping them acculturated among conservative elites so they don’t “go Souter” on the court

Just finished reading So Much Blue by Percival Everett (2017) and loved every minute of it. Just started reading his first novel Suder (1983) & this dude is currently in the top ten of my personal canon. If you have any suggestions for others, please let me know.
