In the golden age of 4chan, $PEPE the Frog reigned supreme with his chill “Feels Good Man” vibes. But by 2015, some users felt Pepe had become too mainstream and was already “ruined.” One anonymous poster asked, “Pepe is over. What’s the next meme?”
Without hesitation, another anon opened MS Paint and crudely drew a lopsided, derpy wolf. He captioned it:
“and on this day wofl was inventend.”
Thus, WOFL was born — a deliberately ugly, misspelled wolf created in pure 4chan spirit: low-effort, absurd, and proudly unpolished.
$WOFL quickly became Pepe’s chaotic underground successor. While Pepe rose from Matt Furie’s comic to global fame and later controversy, WOFL stayed true to its roots as the raw, ironic “next generation” meme. Same MS Paint energy, same animal-roommate vibes, but even more unhinged and self-aware.
WOFL was never trying to replace Pepe.
It was the joke that said, “We don’t need perfection. We’ll just draw something stupid, and it’ll still slap.”
And years later, the derpy wolf still lives on as a quiet reminder of 4chan’s purest chaotic creativity.
WOFL lives on. Feels good. wofl
