Attacking someone’s motives feels satisfying and requires no evidence or counter-analysis. In polarized environments they also serve as quick tribal signals, allowing people to dismiss opposing views without scrutiny. They thrive because they generate fast engagement while protecting weak positions from examination. The best way to handle an ad hominem attack in my opinion is to refrain from engaging. Responding rewards the attacker with engagement and pulls you into a pointless cycle. Starve them of oxygen. Protect your own attention, time, and sanity without hesitation. *Reserve replies for when it genuinely advances truth or protects something important. Strong discourse ultimately depends on holding conversations at the level of evidence and reasoning. Evaluate claims on their merit.
