The popularity of the MBC drama Perfect Crown is driving a surge in domestic OTT platform users. On the days the drama airs, user traffic on Wavve and Disney+ has sharply increased, while on TVING, past works featuring the cast are experiencing a resurgence in popularity.
According to Mobile Index on the 21st, Wavve’s daily active users (DAU) reached about 990,000 on April 18, when episode 4 of the drama was released marking its highest level this year. The same episode recorded a nationwide TV rating of 11.1% (Nielsen Korea), setting a new personal best. As a terrestrial drama achieves success for the first time in a while, Wavve, jointly operated by Korea’s three major broadcasters and SK Square is also gaining attention.
In fact, Wavve’s average daily users, which had been around 850,000 this year, rose to 900,000 on April 10 (the premiere date) and 970,000 on April 11. After briefly dropping back to the 800,000 range, it climbed again to the 900,000 range on April 17–18 following episodes 3 and 4. Highly buzzworthy content tends to attract users not only for replays but also for real-time viewing via “Quick VOD,” leading to spikes in traffic on broadcast days.
A Wavve official stated, “From April 13 to 19, Perfect Crown ranked No.1 across all categories, including number of viewers, viewing time, and driving new paid subscriptions,” adding, “During the same period, viewing time for the drama increased by 98.3% compared to the previous week, showing a steady upward trend.”
Disney+, which simulcasts the drama with MBC, is also seeing positive growth. Its average daily users, previously around 450,000 this year, increased to 570,000 on April 18. The drama is gaining popularity not only domestically but also overseas. According to global OTT ranking site FlixPatrol, as of the previous day, the drama ranked No.4 in the global TV show category and reached No.1 overall (including movies and TV shows) in regions such as Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Brazil.
