On October 1st, 2026, Ontario's minimum wage workers will receive a 35¢ increase to $17.95 per hour. But workers know this is still not enough! While yearly #minimumwage increases matter, they still lag behind what workers need, especially as many work for poverty wages and have their pay stolen by their employers. ✊ Wage theft is a racial justice issue. On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we remind ourselves that fighting wage theft means fighting for #racialjustice. In a world where racism determines how and where we are hired, whether we can speak up and what happens when we do, wage theft systemically keeps Indigenous, Black, migrant, undocumented and other workers of colour down and divided. As Stephanie’s story illustrates, workers have power and can win when we act together against bad bosses and government inaction.

On April 1, 2026, the federal minimum wage will increase to $18.15/hour. 🏆 Workers campaigned hard to reinstate a federal minimum wage and won in 2021, also securing annual increases indexed to the Consumer Price Index. While these are important wins, workers know the fight continues! Better labour laws, like higher minimum wage, are only as strong as their enforcement. For too many federally regulated workers like truck drivers, #wagetheft is an all too common reality. Yes, workers need higher minimum wages, but we also need governments at all levels to enforce these minimum standards and do their jobs.

#stopwagetheft means workers having the power and protections to enforce their rights and get their unpaid wages back! Right now, the Ontario government relies on workers with the least power to identify and report wage theft. This means workers must weigh the risk of standing up for their rights against the risk of being fired. 👉 That’s why we’re calling on the government to take action to ensure that workers have “just cause” protections, protection for collective action (concerted activity), and interim reinstatement.

We do this by training workers to take on employers that break the law and defend their rights and by fighting for systemic change to labour laws and their enforcement through campaigns such as #StopWageTheft.
