@robynngarfield HOA fees and now CDD (Community Development District) fees in Florida. Those typically are listed on the real estate listing so you see a house with a low HOA and don’t catch the high CDD unless you ask about it directly.

@CircumjovialLLC @ronrule There’s a big difference between having an AI write a 5-10 page college essay for you and using a tool like Grammarly to help you catch typos or mistakes. That’s like saying having a dictionary next to you while you write is cheating.

Yes, all this equity that I can do squat with other than pay taxes on it… How about we cut taxes instead of new taxes? Instead of local government looking at us and our property as “sources of revenue” for their pet projects, comfortable jobs of the connected, graft, kickbacks, and incompetence.

@wreckrm @lymanstoneky I have very little sympathy for the consequences of you gaining hundreds of thousands of dollars of equity by doing nothing. But fine: what taxes to replace them with? Gotta be something, and there are few more progressive taxes than property.

I understand perfectly how they work. They are used to cover the incompetence, corruption, and graft of local politicians. Stop acting like local government is some benevolent entity dropping boons upon the citizenry. They are just as crooked and lazy as federal employees. See Los Angeles. See Chicago. See Atlanta. Local spending has exploded in the last decade plus. I’ve watched the school board fire on superintendent and have to pay him off, hire another and watch him explode the budget, only to fire him and have to pay him off. I’ve watched the school system blow obscene amounts of money on laptops and tablets and other unnecessary BS that function as nothing more than kickbacks. All the while the quality of life and quality of education gets worse. Screw the local governments. Starve them of their money and force them to focus on their core mission of providing basic services.

@wreckrm @lymanstoneky You don't understand how property taxes work. Municipalities, counties, states, all set budgets, which sets spending, which sets taxes. Property valuations are used to relatively divvy up the tax burden. It is not an unrealized gains tax.

The current property tax system has been a disaster for everyone else. My home value has doubled in just 5 years AND the county has raised the millage rate multiple times. Between property tax and insurance (since insurance is also tied to home value) I’m almost paying a second mortgage at the moment.

@wreckrm @lymanstoneky That just encourages people to never sell, and has neighbors ending up with wildly different tax burdens for identical properties. Prop 13 has been a disaster for CA if you are under 60.

That’s not what Boomers do. That’s what your FIL did. My Boomer parents went to no end to help my siblings and I in ways we’ll never be able to pay back. My aunts and uncles did the same for their kids. Sorry your FIL was a dick, but don’t ascribe his actions to millions of other individuals.

I told my kids that they would lose their devices and be grounded if they bought any microtransactions. That did the trick for them. As for regular games, it was either money they saved up or birthday/Christmas gifts. My one big splurge was getting two used Xbox 360s so we could all play Destiny together.

Hey Twitter Parents! Got a genuine question: When I grew up, it was totally normal having to pay a premium price tag for video games. I remember having to save all my allowance for almost a full year in order to finally purchase Street Fighter 2 Turbo for like a thousand schillings back in the day - which right now feels equivalent to around 100 USD. But the gaming landscape has changed a lot over the past 20 years. Mobile Gaming became a thing, games being 'free' while actually being financed mostly through MTX became a thing, etc. So... if you have kids ranging from 6-20 years old, what's their stance on what games ought to cost? Are you consistently buying 60-70$ games for them? Or are they mostly spending their time on games that are 'free'? How regularly are your kids buying Microtransactions?

“Unrealized gains” is a fake term made up by rich people to justify not paying taxes. Its the financial equivalent of a schoolchild saying “IM NOT TOUCHING YOU!” Sorry, but assets are wealth. Might as well say money isn’t wealth since you havent traded it for goods and services
The Refined Populist@RefinedPopulist

If your 1970’s home is now worth $1M, you’re on the hook for ~$10K/yr. Based entirely on unrealized gains. That’s absurd for the fixed-income elderly. Property taxes SHOULD be abolished for Boomers. But they should be abolished for everyone else too. Property taxes are evil.

@MattMorseTV @StrokeJoke @BradenLOA Considering we spend more money per pupil than other countries only to get worse results, maybe there could be some belt tightening done by school systems and local governments.

If public schools are generally funded by property taxes, and the largest property-owning demographic in the country (seniors) stops paying property taxes, what do you think happens next? Who do you think is going to foot the bill? Young American families who are already financially struggling with the costs of raising children.

I just wanted to remind you all about how BIG Destiny used to be. Look at this clip from the Destiny 2 reveal event. Massive crowd, giant stage, and a huge ol 2. Oh and ofc Luke Smith actual Bungie leadership talking to us. The lead up to Destiny 2 launch was insane. #WeWantDestiny3
