Without a doubt, the best Halftime Show I’ve ever seen. A true celebration of an American culture that few of us ever witness. I didn’t understand much of what they were saying, but I didn’t need to. They said it all without having to sing a word. It was intimate, rather than a spectacle; handheld cameras in the middle of people who were happy and joyful. Color and excitement everywhere. No sweeping stadium shots or reliance on shock and awe. Just us, you and me, in the middle of a party that we didn’t deserve to be invited to, but were anyway. Hospitality. True welcome. A reminder to the world that our nation *IS* more than white dudes wrapped in business suits, confederate flags, and Bible drag… we are much more. At least, we SHOULD be more than that… and the better part of us is.

@StevieVanZandt Stevie, huge fan but this is not it. I’m a super white 50-plus mom in the NJ suburbs and I LOVED IT. My college Spanish wasn’t up to the task, but much of it required no translation. It was one of the best halftime shows I’ve ever seen!

@JeffGoldklang @SteveKornacki This is my *current* district (and I’ve lived here 21 years) and you couldn’t be more wrong. The level of excitement in my extremely normie mom’s text group last night when it started to look like she could win was huge. (And the vote in the group had been split Mejia/Way/Gill.)

Maybe? I’m skeptical. This is my old district. I’d bet heavily that people will wake up tomorrow and realize the back door win by the progressive isn’t what the voters want. The GOP candidate will get $ from the same orgs that cost Malinowski, and it’s a moderate district that will mobilize to keep an extremist like Mejia out.

What is happening in NJ-11 tonight feels momentous. The state has long been dominated by a throwback political culture, particularly on the Democratic side, but there has been upheaval in the last few years as the party's increasingly activist/professional class base has been in revolt. In Essex County, the biggest part of the district, having the support of party leaders was for generations practically tantamount to victory in a primary. But tonight, the Essex organization-backed candidate is running 3rd in the county -- far behind an AOC-Sanders-backed progressive insurgent, Analilia Mejia, who is currently leading district-wide and has no support from any of its county organizations.

@AmyMcGrathKY My dad was a polio survivor too. He was a three-sport athlete in high school and, I’m told, a fantastic dancer. I wouldn’t know…my entire life he walked with a brace on one withered leg, and needed a wheelchair in later years as he battled post-polio syndrome. I have no words.

My mother, a polio survivor, was one of the kids who helped Dr. Salk test his vaccine in the 1950s to make it safe for all Americans and for the world. This is a absolute disgrace. The Polio and measles vaccines have saved millions of lives.
