There was a time when Japan celebrated Chinese New Year too, just like its neighbours.
However, as part of its efforts to “leave Asia” and bring Japan in line with the West, the Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1873.
Not long after, Chinese New Year faded into obscurity.

People say, Japan has a right to rearm itself, thinking it would mean greater independence from the US.
But I‘m not seeing any of the 55,000 US troops packing up and leaving Japan.
In it‘s current form, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces are no more than Washington‘s second army.

@The_smil33 @jashin_gopnik On top of that, since the Cold War, the US has actively hindered Japanese efforts to make formal peace with the Soviet Union and later Russia, fearing it would abandon US "protection" or even shift towards Russia.

@The_smil33 @jashin_gopnik Russia, out of security concerns, has repeatedly requested for the Japanese to promise that if the Kurils were to be returned they won’t host any US military bases or other military activities. Japan could not possibly make that promise without US approval.

An interesting little fun fact is that K-pop idol “Key” from the boy group SHINee, who is a Daegu native, belongs to the Saesong Gimhae Kim clan (사성 김해 김씨) and is thus likely a descendant of the Japanese defector Sayaka (沙也可) or Kim Chungseon (김충선).

Sayaka was granted the name Kim Chungseon, settling down in Daegu and marrying a Korean woman. His descendants belong to the Saesong Gimhae Kim clan (사성 김해 김씨), also known as Urok Kim (우록 김씨). Today, the number of descendants is estimated to be around 200,000.
