On the topic of unfairness in the Olympics:
- Emma Wilson led the windsurfing, and had a lead that would have guaranteed Gold in the last Olympics
- But... after Tokyo, they'd changed the format to add greater 'jeopardy' to the final. That meant, this time round, they wiped out her entire points lead for the final
- Instead of keeping her points, her massive lead simply meant she jumped past the quarters and semis, automatically going into a final vs two others, competing for gold, silver or bronze, rather than being guaranteed gold
- But going straight to the final is not really much of an advantage: it means you do not get to race & practice the course in the quarters/semis, whereas the other finalists do, meaning they understand which lines to take, and where they can push you out of the lines: a bit like racing an f1 lap where you're the only one who doesn't know the course. Ie, you are guaranteed a medal, but the medal race is against others who have a huge advantage.
- In summary: in the final, she then had to compete vs others, with her points advantage wiped out, where the other finalists had the advantage of much greater knowledge & practice of the course & knowing exactly where they can push you out of the lines.
Predictably, though she had beaten the gold medalist in all but one qualifying race, she came third instead of first in the final, being the only finalist not to have been allowed to practice the course in the quarters/semis.
Congrats, Emma, it would have been nice to see what would have happened in an even vaguely fair system.
@geake@danbarker Disagree Josh. I didn’t see the others deliberately going slow in the qualifiers. They were just outclassed. The problem here was that the wind dropped and the semis and final were in another day. Completely different race day.
@homomediocritus I’m talking about nonunion due to failure to diagnose a fracture, not failure of treatment. My point is that we shouldn’t rely on MR to do all the work. We still miss fractures in units that use MR liberally in ED because the clinician didn’t think of the diagnosis.
#bsshscaphoid MR for every patient with radial sides wrist pain will never abolish scaphoid nonunion. Education for skaters and goalkeepers etc… is really important to prevent this awful situation in a young sportsman
We concentrate so much on picking up the injury that we miss sight of the fact that these are virtual ALL stable and will heal. Patients will tell you if they have a problem, as long as they have access. Fife virtual hand clinic ?scaphoid injury. #bsshscaphoid
#bsshscaphoid I think it’s important to define clearly for everyone who treats wrist injuries what constitutes a suspected scaphoid fracture clinically. There’s much confusion about where to palpate and not much appreciation given to the history.
@hand_specialist I think they do. Nothing much to lose but can make the diagnosis. See several in my medicolegal practice that have been missed on 2 views alone.
#bsshscaphoid education to ENPs GPS and all clinicians involved at the very start of the pathway is paramount to raise the suspicion of a fracture in the first place
I love snow but people of Gloucestershire, please enjoy your snow day carefully.....the last thing we need @gloshospitals is an influx of broken bones in A&E, thank you 💙 @wtmmason
