Trout lily (Erythronium americanum) and Dutchman’s britches (Dicentra cucullaria) have begun blooming in the Arboretum! Cutleaf toothwort (Cardamine concatenata), bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), and spring beauty (Claytonia sp.) are starting to be numerous, but not at peak.

A few bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) and cutleaf toothwort (Cardamine concatenata) plants have begun to bloom, spring beauty (Claytonia sp.) flowers are abundant, but nowhere near peak bloom, and harbinger of spring (Erigenia bulbosa) is still at peak bloom!

At least one spring beauty (Claytonia virginica) was blooming today! Harbinger of spring (Erigenia bulbosa) is near peak bloom. Look for harbinger of spring near the "woodland wildflowers" sign along Nuttall Trail, and along Sheldon Trail near its intersection with Nuttall Trail.

Harbingers of bloom! Harbinger of spring (Erigenia bulbosa) is starting to bloom and Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) and other spring ephemeral leaves are up along the Sheldon Trail! Just a couple were found today, but soon there will be many!

Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is blooming now at the Arboretum. Some nice specimens of this native, late-blooming shrub can be found near the bridge at the top of Taylor Trail, where it connects to Guthrie Loop Trail.

This wheel bug (Arilus cristatus) was found in the lawn area of the Arboretum yesterday. That "beak" is extended and used to pierce small, soft-bodied insects. The wheel bug then liquifies the contents of the other insect with enzymes and sucks the juices out of its prey.
