When forests like Margalla face increasing urban expansion, the impact is not just on trees and landscapes, it reshapes the entire survival system of wildlife. As natural prey becomes scarce, animals such as leopards are forced to shift their diet towards easily available food sources around human settlements, including stray dogs, rodents, and even livestock. This shift is not a choice, it is an adaptation driven by shrinking natural habitats. At the same time, fragmented forests disrupt natural movement corridors. Wildlife is pushed into isolated patches or forced to cross roads and urban areas, increasing the risk of road accidents, conflict, and in many cases, capture and relocation. What we are witnessing is not just habitat loss - it is behavioural change under pressure. And every such change brings wildlife closer to survival challenges we rarely see, but deeply shape their future. Read our PR: wwfpak.org/?396495/Leopar…

This year’s wheat season is being shaped by increasingly unstable weather conditions. The impact is not limited to the field. When climate patterns shift, food systems and livelihoods shift with them. We continue to highlight the urgent need for climate-resilient agriculture to protect both farmers and food security.

A morning of cycling turned into a day of energy, learning, and environmental awareness. A recent cyclathon in collaboration with International School Lahore (ISL), brought together 300 participants, including school children, the activity created a vibrant atmosphere on ground. Beyond cycling, it encouraged participants to engage with environmental themes and reflect on why protecting natural ecosystems matters. At WWF-Pakistan, experiences such as this help shape how younger generations connect with nature and understand their role in safeguarding it for the future.

Pangolin rescued from illegal poaching safely returned to the wild. The pangolin was recovered by Mardan Wildlife Division of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department in coordination with WWF-Pakistan. The pangolin remained under close observation and received necessary rehabilitation under veterinary supervision to ensure its quarantine and recovery. With in-kind support from Lincoln University, the pangolin was tagged successfully released into its natural habitat in Swabi, within the designated Pangolin Protection Zone, Mardan. This effort reflects the importance of coordinated conservation action to protect one of the world’s most trafficked and vulnerable species.

The word of the month is Urban Heat Island 🌆 As cities across Pakistan continue to expand, temperatures in urban areas are rising faster than surrounding regions. Reduced green cover and increasing concrete are making our cities hotter, impacting both people and nature. Small actions like protecting green spaces and planting trees can make a real difference in creating cooler, more livable cities. Understanding this effect is the first step toward building cooler, more climate-resilient cities.

WWF-Pakistan expresses serious concern regarding ongoing and proposed development activities in areas adjoining Margalla Hills National Park, particularly within ecologically sensitive foothill zones. These activities raise significant risks for one of Islamabad’s most important ecological landscapes, including habitat fragmentation, disruption of wildlife movement corridors, and long-term degradation of ecosystem services. Given the ecological sensitivity of the Margalla Hills, WWF-Pakistan urges that all development activities follow strict environmental safeguards, transparent assessment processes, and science-based planning. With over 65% of the population under 30, WWF-Pakistan is investing in young people as today’s climate leaders through the Nature Clubs for Youth (NC4Y) programme, supported by the Avery Dennison Foundation. From Skardu to Hyderabad, students are turning ideas into action by designing solutions for waste, water, and ecosystem restoration, backed by mentorship and seed funding. 🎥 Hear from Taseer Ali Mirza, Head of Corporate Engagement and Environmental Education, on why youth-led climate action matters. 🔗 Read more in the full press release: wwfpak.org/?396438/WWF-Pa… #YouthForClimate #GreenEntrepreneurship #WWFPakistan #ClimateAction

In March, WWF-Pakistan engaged 800+ students and young people across Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi, turning awareness into action through hands-on environmental learning. From career and internship fairs at Beaconhouse International College and The City School – Capital Campus, students explored pathways to contribute to conservation, with many expressing interest in WWF-Pakistan’s Students Ambassadorship Programme and Youth for Nature Programme as platforms for meaningful engagement and profile building. Learning extended beyond classrooms. Through our Conservation Pathfinders Nature Photography Workshop, participants from diverse backgrounds were introduced to photography as a tool for environmental advocacy. In the South, our outreach reached over 700 students from shelter homes and special education institutions, including Sirat-ul-Jannah Orphanage and Street to School. Youth leadership remained central as a 7-Day Sustainability Challenge was led across five community schools in Karachi, encouraging practical actions like composting, upcycling, and DIY bird feeders, alongside clean-up drives, contributing to SDGs 11, 12, and 13. At Sarim Burney Charity Home, the “Say No to Plastic” campaign engaged 60+ children through interactive learning and tote bag painting, promoting sustainable everyday choices. Recognising emerging environmental concerns, interns also launched “Think Before You Prompt,” highlighting the often-overlooked environmental cost of excessive AI usage, particularly its impact on water and energy consumption in water-stressed cities like Karachi. Together, these efforts reflect a growing community of young changemakers shaping a more sustainable future.

Air quality in Faisalabad has seen reported improvements in recent months, reflecting ongoing efforts to better understand and manage urban environments. At the same time, air quality can vary across different parts of the city, and certain areas still require closer attention. Faisalabad is steadily moving in this direction, with systems now in place to track and respond to air quality trends. From residential neighborhoods to university spaces. PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, and PM₁ levels are being actively monitored, helping identify patterns and guide responses where needed to support healthier living conditions. Through the EPIC Air Quality Project, 10 monitoring stations are tracking PM₁, PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, CO₂, humidity, and more, strengthening the foundation for informed action and long-term improvement in urban air quality. #AirQuality #Faisalabad #CleanAir #WWFPakistan #AirPollution

Did you know? In many mountain communities, human-wildlife conflict isn’t just about conservation, it’s about survival. When livestock is lost to predators like the common leopard, families lose a critical source of income. This often leads to retaliatory actions that put already vulnerable species at greater risk. We have launched a pilot livestock insurance scheme in Galiyat, in collaboration with Jubilee General Insurance, to compensate verified losses. The initiative aims to reduce financial stress on communities and discourage retaliatory killing of wildlife. Learn more in the PR: wwfpak.org/?396375/Livest…

For generations, the communities of Khizrabad and Hussainabad villages in District Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan have relied on a single water channel as their primary source of drinking water and irrigation. Supporting over 450 households, this channel has sustained livelihoods rooted in potatoes, cherries, and thriving orchards. However, over time, persistent seepage, seasonal closures, and declining water flow began to take a serious toll. The unchecked seepage not only reduced water availability but also made surrounding land vulnerable to landslides and erosion, putting homes, fields, and lives at risk. As trees began to dry up, the community was left struggling to manage an increasingly fragile and hazardous system on its own. Recognizing the urgency, WWF-Pakistan stepped in to support restoration efforts in close collaboration with the community. Today, the water flows more efficiently, risks have been reduced, livelihoods are stabilizing, and a renewed sense of safety and contentment is taking root.
