Literally none of the Indians I grew up and went to college with referred to themselves as “Asian”. There was a coordinated push in the 2010s to manufacture this from 2 groups: recent Indian immigrants who wanted to latch onto an existing political movement and “AAPI” NGOs who wanted more members and donations.
