What is extraordinary to me isn't the tone-deafness of the institution but rather the slow decline in the quality of scholarship and scholars at Harvard. Many exceptional older faculty are retiring to be replaced by faculty recruited with a different agenda and notion of impact. This preference isn't just a Harvard phenomenon but extends to most of the Ivy League. We are systematically losing our academic edge as a nation. These institutions served as a beacon to bring the most brilliant and capable from the world to the United States. I don't see that beacon staying lit much longer. Maybe that's a good thing, and it's time for a different model entirely.
