After talking with Blizzard’s lawyers, they agreed to stop everything by May 14, 2026. The servers will stay open until that date. You can still play your characters on realms like Frostmourne, Sheilun, and Netherwing. No new accounts or updates will be added. After May 14, the website and Discord will close too. This comes right after Blizzard won a court case against another big private server called TurtleWoW. Stormforge ran for more than four years. For many players, this is the end of a fun chapter in World of Warcraft.

@LolcowAgency That’s assuming the only way a credential stealer can be installed is via discord. Theres been a few major applications recently compromised with credential stealers on legitimate and trusted sites. Adding that extra step of verification when changing account info stops takeovers

@xRanLive There is. Before open a link or download a file it warns you. "Do you want to leave discord? This site might be umsafe" thats the layer. After that its on the person who go to the website or downlpads the file. They are responsible for their own actions after that.

@xRanLive just replying to ypu this way the guy who tweeted blocked me he got upset. But in essencr 2factor is a layer of security meant to prevent unauthorized access. Though not always sucessfull therein lays the the problem with modern day security factors.

@LolcowAgency It’s definitely a used clicked bad link problem but just one extra step of security adds a ton of security. Right now the attack works even with 2FA because it steals the token. Add a new token requirement for editing the account and now hackers can’t fully take over.

The person who got hacked had 2factor auth but fun fact. When you download an executable on discord it gives you a popup warning you that it could be malicous. You have 2 options. Download or cancel. My guess is he downloaded it willingly avoiding the warning or from a site

A token that allows for updating an account that expires extremely fast (sub 30 minutes) would prevent the take overs and most people would never notice.

It’s absolutely insane that despite @discord seeing constant account takeovers they do nothing. Literally one simple things would stop this. Most of these accounts are having their auth token taken. Just require another auth token to go in and change account info.
