@WDLD0712 Idk about uni admission and loans but you do get reduction in your military service. Point is, being in basij doesn't even increase your social status. People do it because they're sincere in their beliefs. To think that Basijis are there bcs of money or status is not true.

Yes most Basijis are reservists, and instead of a salary they get preferential access to state services, university admission, preferential loans and housing, preferential hiring for jobs + the social status of being a Basiji. These things are managed through corporate “trusts” like the Bonyad Taavon Basij. Whereas Active and Special Basijis (actual organisational categories) receive salaries and stipends from the IRGC itself, in addition to all the above.

People look at Iran’s hyperinflation and comical debasement of its Rial, and think “why don’t they just switch to Bitcoin or Gold?”. What they don’t understand is that Iran is not a normal state and economy. The truth is that holding monopoly over currency issuance is one of Iranian state’s strongest arms. It allows the Iranian state to always pay its obligations, even if it means cannibalising the Iranian economy and its people’s purchasing power. Since the nation is already under crushing sanctions, the state foremost priority is maintaining its grip on power because the solution to sanctions-induced economic pain is political capitulation to the US and Israel, not domestic fiscal and monetary reform. Mass economic misery is a foregone conclusion, and so their political economy is centred on securing its domestic power bases at all costs. These power bases include its militaries and paramilitaries, its clerical institutions, its military-industrial complex etc. I’ll spell out an example so you can visualise what I’m talking about: The Veloyat i Faqih system is protected by the IRGC abroad, and the Basij at home. The Basij is a paramilitary force that absorbs tens of millions of Iranian chuds who’d otherwise be disgruntled young men burning the streets for lack of opportunity and the indignity of crushing poverty. The Basij confers upon these young disenfranchised men relative social status, a salary, and a sense of self-actualisation from being part of the state’s apparatus of power. It’s a pittance for sure, but the status and regular income is better than nothing. For example, a Basiji chud has better chances getting married than a civilian man, and this means a lot in a sexually conservative Muslim society where a young man’s economic activity is primarily driven by preparing for marriage. This pressure is what drives a lot of westward migration from Muslim countries. As long as the Iranian state can buy the loyalty of these young Basijis, the Veloyati system will hold no matter how big the protests are. Chuds are ever-ready to spill rivers of civilian blood to protect the system that gives them meaning and dignity. This is the power of earning the loyalty of your young men, and is worth studying as a standalone chapter of political theory. If the Iranian state dollarises or “bitcoin-ise” or “metallises” their currency, they lose the power to cannibalise the economy to funnel resources to their power bases, and this is political suicide. The supply of USD or BTC would be effectively inelastic in Iran, thereby forcing fiscal constraints on the state, which would need to tax money out of the private sector and into the treasury before spending. This would be political disaster, forcing compromises they don’t want to make. The Veloyati state is ideological first, and developmental second. It doesn’t care if a significant percentage of the Iranian people hate them, because the Veloyati state doesn’t need democratic consensus to survive.
