Some people are still claiming: “Goth is inherently political. It came from pushing back against Thatcher in the UK. It’s about anti-authority rebellion, society’s rot, DIY, queer expression, and left-leaning resistance at its core. The fashion, vampires, and graveyards are all about mourning/subverting power. Saying it’s not political erases history.” That’s a modern gatekeeping narrative, not the full reality. I might be repeating myself a bit here but it’s needed.. • Goth started as a music and aesthetic subculture out of late-70s/early-80s UK post-punk. Bauhaus, Siouxsie, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and others delivered dark romance, melancholy, horror vibes, alienation, and atmosphere. Some lyrics touched on tough times and society — yes. But the scene was never a unified political movement or mandatory leftist resistance. • The 80s had real economic pain. That context is real. But actual goth clubs (Batcave era etc.) were about blasting the music, dressing dramatic, dancing, escapism, and sharing outsider energy. Longtime 80s/90s veterans say politics almost never came up on the floor. It was the vibe, not activism. • You don’t need to DIY your entire wardrobe, be queer (though many are and are welcome), or hold any specific politics to be goth. Black lace, vampires, and graveyards come from gothic literature, horror movies, and romanticism — not a secret anti-mainstream political code. Peter Steele (Type O Negative) — one of the most iconic voices in gothic/romantic doom. He was openly critical of socialism, valued personal responsibility, and held views that definitely weren’t “left resistance.” His music is still pure goth for millions. The aesthetic and sound stood on their own. I’ve been goth for around 12 years because of my dad. I’m politically neutral. I’m proud to be American 🇺🇸. That doesn’t make me a villain, MAGA, or whatever label people want to slap on me for disagreeing. It just means I love the music, the style, and the dark atmosphere without turning it into an ideology test. Forcing “goth = left-wing resistance only” shrinks the scene and drives people away. Real goth has always had room for anyone who feels the music and the mood — no purity test required. Music doesn’t check your politics. The black fits whoever wears it. 🖤
