The "jock tax" is a state income tax on non-resident athletes for earnings tied to games or events in that state, based on "duty days" spent there. For Darnold, California's tax applies to a portion of his full-season income (prorated by ~10 Super Bowl duty days in CA), estimated at $249K due to his high salary and CA's 13.3% top rate. His Super Bowl bonus was $178K, so the tax exceeds it, netting a $71K loss.
