Dr. Arfaee studied Old Persian, Avestan, and Pahlavi, and was the first to translate the Cyrus Cylinder from Akkadian into Persian. A student of Richard Hallock, he dedicated much of his career to the Elamite-language texts of the Persepolis Fortification Archive.

Today, February 25 (6 Esfand), the renowned Iranian epigraphist Abdul Majid Arfaee passed away in Tehran at the age of 86. What a loss for our academia 🥀

Bakhtiari life in Dehdez. Dehdez, a quiet town of ten thousand, served as our transit point on the route between Izeh and Sheyvand.

@AnnKjellstr If you mean Shahr-e Kord (شهرکرد), it’s actually not that small – it’s a provincial capital with a population of around 200,000. I visited it last year, a great place to stay! 💙

The tell itself is Elamite (now largely disappearing under new construction), while the castle dates from the mid‑19th century. 🧵 2/3

Eli Elamti daʾummātum ikṣurū (Ash. 227: r. 1) "Darkness fell upon the land of Elam," Ashurbanipal wrote in Akkadian in the mid‑7th century BC. It cuts deep! Here is Qaleh Tall, or Qal'eh-ye Tul, "The Castle upon the Tell" – a town half an hour's drive from Izeh. 🧵 1/3
