What began as an ordinary evening ended in violence so raw, it still refuses to be forgotten. First meet up,first date. Did she trust so much? Velvine Nungari Kinyanjui was 24 years old. A waitress at Destiny Garden in Ruiru, she carried the quiet strength of someone who showed up every day, serving others with a smile while holding her own hopes close. On the evening of 23 February 2021, while at work, she met Joseph Kinyua Murimi. They spoke, connected, and agreed to meet later for drinks once her shift ended. She was supposed to be joined by a friend that night, but the friend could not make it. Velvine went ahead. The two spent time together, moving from one spot to another before ending up at Sinnot Hotel in Kiamumbi. CCTV footage captured them at the reception, collecting the key to a room. The next morning, when Velvine did not show up, her worried friend traced her movements to the hotel. Staff confirmed they had seen her go upstairs with a man. They went to the room and found Velvine lying unconscious on the bed. She was rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KU Referral Hospital). Doctors found she had been severely beaten. Her spinal cord was broken, with compression fractures along her vertebral column. There were also cervical fractures and other serious injuries consistent with violent trauma, including sexual assault. Velvine fought for her life over several days in hospital, but the damage was too great. She died on 9 March 2021. An autopsy confirmed that the fractures to her spine had led to complications, including the collapse of her lungs. Joseph Kinyua Murimi was arrested as the prime suspect. He had been seen with her that night and was the last person known to have been in the room with her. Shockingly, despite the horror of the crime, he was later released on Kshs 200,000 cash bail. Detectives examined CCTV evidence and other leads, but the outrage remained: a young life had been violently stolen, and the world demanded justice. She was a young woman who stepped out with someone she had just met, trusting the evening would be ordinary — only to suffer brutal violence that stole her life.
