@GregClarkAB This concept needs to go. and you failed to explain (although it's in your report) that the concept has limits according to previous SCC rulings. Our existing maps and the ones the majority proposed still give too much power to rural voters at the expense of urban voters.

Each time Alberta has established an Electoral Boundaries Commission to redraw election maps the government has accepted the commission’s majority report, so I was surprised and disappointed to learn that a committee of MLAs has instead been tasked with creating a new map. /1

@GregClarkAB I wish I could say this is an unbelievable act on the part of Premier Smith and her MLAs, but it's not. It's totally believable. In fact, we should expect this sort of action from this provincial government given our experience with them for 2 years now!

What we can’t do is simply drop two new seats onto an existing map. The commission goes where the data takes us, and context matters when we're creating a map based on effective representation for all. /11

The majority’s view on number of seats in the Legislature was clear; we suggested future commissions be given the power to set the number of seats in the Legislature (like they do in BC), and if so “…we may very well have proposed a map of at least 91 electoral divisions.” /9

While Mayor of Calgary, Naheed Nenshi travelled to China on a trip bankrolled by the World Economic Forum and a Chinese government agency. He repeatedly billed taxpayers for trips to Davos and even accepted an all-expenses-paid stay at the Rockefeller Foundation’s retreat in Italy. Seeing him get this rattled when the facts are put on the record is something else.
