Everyone is quite rightly giving Bruno Fernandes a lot of credit for his 19 Premier League assists so far this season. Ignore the chat about set-pieces, anyone who has paid any attention to football this campaign will see their increasing importance. But... Federico Dimarco's 17 league assists, a new Serie A record, from left wing-back, isn't being talked about nearly enough. Marcelo, Alba, Robertson... we've seen some phenomenal attacking left-backs this century. But their highest amount of League assists in a single season? Marcelo and Alba 10, Robertson 12... Puts it into perspective just how extraordinary his season has been, especially coming off a brutal end to 24/25 with his side gunning for a treble, before ending up with nothing.... and Dimarco struggling in the latter stages of the Champions League. Top work!

Did you know that for every one of your Academy product that makes a transfer, you can get up 5% of the transfer fee? It doesn’t matter if he makes 5 transfers over the course of the career. It doesn’t even matter if he makes a transfer at age 45. You get a cut of his transfer fee. You don’t have to ask me how. You already know I will tell you why. You remember the last time we spoke about Training Compensations as a type of training rewards yeah? Well, this one is the second one. It’s called the FIFA Solidarity Mechanism and it's one of the most powerful (yet underrated) financial tools in football. Most fans have never heard of it. Most academy owners don't fully understand how it works. But it's the reason small clubs can keep surviving and investing in youth even after the big boys come and take their best talents. Here's how it works. According to Article 21 and Annexe 5 of FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP), when a professional player is transferred internationally while still under contract (meaning for a fee, not on a free), 5% of the entire transfer fee is automatically set aside. That 5% is distributed as solidarity contributions to every club that trained and registered the player between the ages of 12 and 23. That is what the Solidarity Mechanism is. You wanna know what the beauty of this is? It's not a one-time thing. Unlike training compensation (which is mainly for the first pro contract and moves up to age 23), solidarity keeps paying out on every qualifying international transfer throughout the player's career. Even when he's in his late 20s or early 30s. The featured image of this post has begun to make sense to you now right? How Does It Actually Work? The 5% pot is split based on the seasons the player spent at each training club, with heavier weighting for the more important later years: · Seasons when the player turned 12 to 15: each season = 0.25% of the total transfer fee · Seasons when the player turned 16 to 23: each season = 0.5% of the total transfer fee This means that as an Academy owner, for every year a player spends undergoing training in your Academy, and depending on the age of the player when he was in your academy, get either 0.25% of the total transfer fee or 0.5% of the total transfer fee. Do you get it now? Simple rule: Earlier years(12-15) get smaller slices of the pie. The formative teenage years get bigger ones.  You would recall that a similar rule applies to the Training Compensation as well- where the Academies’ training compensation for Ages 12-15 is calculated based on Category 4 of the buying club’s payment structure. Please read my piece on Training compensation to understand. The link is under this post. Now let’s have an example Let's say 15-year-old Chinedu from your Gambian academy has been with you since he was 13. He's electric. A Belgian club comes and signs him. Years later: He develops, moves around, and at age 27, he's transferred from a French Ligue 1 club to a Premier League side for €40 million. Here's what happens: · 5% of €40 million for the solidarity pot = €2 million · Your academy trained him for 6 full seasons (calendar years he turned 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18): o Ages 13–15 (3 seasons × 0.25%) = 0.75% o Ages 16–18 (3 seasons × 0.5%) = 1.5% o Total for your club: 2.25% of €40 million = €900,000 Nine hundred thousand euros. For a kid who left your academy over a decade ago. Do you get it? And the fun part is that since 2022, FIFA's Clearing House handles everything. It uses the player's Electronic Player Passport (EPP) to identify every training club, calculates the exact amounts, and pays the clubs directly. You don’t even have to chase the money. It just lands in your account (usually within 30 to 60 days). The Takeaway The Solidarity Mechanism is FIFA's way of saying: big clubs pay for the talent, but small clubs get paid for the development. That wonderkid who left your academy at 16 might bounce around Europe for a decade, and every time he moves for a fee, you get a cut. Remember that it's not a charity to you. It's recognition for the work you did when nobody else was paying attention. So if you're running a youth academy, make sure every registration is properly logged in TMS and the player's Electronic Player Passport is accurate. Because that kid you lost at 16 might still be your best financial investment at 28.  In essence, make sure you follow ALL Compliance procedures. And you will be glad you did.
