I watched this yesterday and spent some time reading more about induced demand. I thought he did an incredible job explaining the concept. What surprises me is that everyone seems fixated on the idea that road expansion means people will immediately buy more private cars. That is only one possible mechanism, and in a country like Ghana it may not even be the biggest one. The broader idea is that road usage increases. People make more trips, development expands, more people move to places like Kasoa because commuting becomes easier, and public transport operators (trotros and buses) put more vehicles on the road to meet the increased demand. The carpooling example wasn’t the strongest, but the overall phenomenon has been observed in cities like Jakarta, Lagos, Bangalore, and Mexico City. Expanding roads by itself often does not solve congestion in the long run. That doesn’t mean roads should never be expanded. It means road expansion alone is rarely enough. The better long-term solution is to pair it with reliable public transport. It doesn’t have to be rail. A fast, dependable, affordable bus system that connects people to where they actually want to go can move far more people with fewer vehicles on the road. I thought it was a great video because it encouraged us to think beyond the obvious solution. Sometimes the intuitive answer isn’t the one that works best over the long term.
