I think the cruelest, most beautiful trick this finale played on me was the scene with Rue and her mom.
Because for a few minutes, I let myself believe it was the conversation I’d wanted for three seasons — the two of them finally face to face, the apology, the understanding, the we made it. Leslie loved that girl through every overdose, every stolen moment, every door that slammed in her face, and I wanted her to get one clean, peaceful exchange as a reward for never giving up.
And the scene was that tender. It was that warm. The cinematography was so gorgeous it had me in tears before I even understood why.
Then the floor fell out: she wasn’t reconciling. She was dying. The warmth wasn’t a homecoming — it was the last thing a fading mind reaches for. Rue, slipping away on a couch, conjuring her mother because her mother was the safest place she had ever known.
That’s what undid me. Not the death itself, but who she reached for at the end of it. After all the running, all the lying, all the ways she pushed her family away when there was nothing left, her last instinct was to reach for her mom. She didn’t reach for a high. She didn’t reach for Jules. She reached for the woman who had loved her at her absolute worst.
And the unbearable echo: it all began with a parent, too. Her father’s illness, his painkillers, the grief that cracked her open at sixteen. She came into the world narrating her own birth in her mother’s arms and she left it reaching for those same arms, in her father’s hoodie. The whole seven years folded shut into that one gesture.
I don’t think I’ll forget it. Not the dying the reaching. 🐰
