On the Fela and Wizkid conversation. Fela is unquestionably great, but insisting on “the greatest” is limiting and ultimately makes us smaller. What we’ve really failed at is telling the stories of many of our other greats and the feats they achieved largely because we haven’t done the work. Fela’s story crossed borders because “people” told and funded it well and those “people” are not us. Instead of learning how to organize ourselves to tell more stories, we’ve chosen to camp there. And we think that is reverence? Na lie. It is laziness. There are countless Nigerian stories that deserve the same care, structure, and amplification. Also let’s drop the weak argument about Fela not having social media. The space was quieter then, today it’s far more crowded and competitive. Staying at the top now is harder than ever. Fela did his part brilliantly. But he is only one story, not the whole story. Nigeria doesn’t have a single royalty, it has layers of legacy. We could have 50 museums, 50 serious studies, and masterclasses on musicians past and present if we chose to do the work. I’m not writing this because of anyone’s outburst or comparison. It’s about waking up, moving forward, and refusing to reduce ourselves to one narrative when so many important stories are still unfolding. #Wizkid #FelaKuti

You are the firewood for this cooking. Go and think. Look for new ideas. You needed an interviewer to spend half an entire showing trying to get former opposition spokesman to rescind his words. A platform that Nigerian could have been sold better. You must be daft.
raihan@raihan_gonja

@yinkaobebe you watch the whole interview and this is what you come up with? nah, nigeria is truly cooked

You are just bereft of ideas and any type of productive thinking at all. To think you had 3 years of to at least think. You will obviously do this again in 2027 and go home with nothing. You have a few more months, go and think.

Aunty. I’m not defending anybody. Daniel Defended himself. I don’t think you understood the interview you watched.
Jamin@NicespiritJamin

@yinkaobebe @Olamide0fficial And you watched the same interview as most Nigerians??? The only reason the interviewer said those words was because the guy you are trying to defend couldn’t defend his own claims while in the opposition.

Danney Ejemole@danneyejemole

@yinkaobebe So you want him to go to interviews where he will literally lie through his teeth and be applauded for a job well done than where his lies will be checked with facts. Ihere eme. Pls dey go

So how did the age of your bosses that you knew help you to do your job better. Common. Always majoring in minor. Some of you are completely unbelievable and it’s a real shame.
Anyika Donald@tobyke

@yinkaobebe The mere fact a spokesperson does not know the age of his boss is an embarrassment to the nation. All my bosses i have worked for i still can remember their date of birth. We have a globally recognised corrupt person involved in money laudering managing our budget.

Abi. Why must it be only negative things about us that must be discussed and debated for a whole hour. Is every country discussing their dirty linen. Other people are sharing innovation, progress. Are we saying there is nothing good out of Nigeria worthy of a global debate. The guy knew Nigerians will bite hard and they didn’t disappoint. Some people really think someone is coming to save them.

I’ve seen the widely circulated clips from the interview between Daniel Bwala and one Al Jazeera host. At one point the host even hinted that he couldn’t wait to see what social media would do with the content. That alone tells you something about the intent. It felt less like a serious attempt to discuss Nigeria and more like a search for ratings and viral moments. In my view, Daniel Bwala should probably not have attended in the first place. Much of the exchange appeared designed to discredit the president and, by extension, Nigeria itself. The interviewer repeatedly interrupted and pushed the conversation toward confrontation rather than substance. To his credit, Bwala remained composed and did not allow himself to be baited. We also need to be honest about something. Western media often holds Nigeria and Africans to standards that they themselves have rarely met either personally or through their own leaders. Pointing this out is not an excuse for bad behavior or mediocrity. Nigeria has real problems, and we must continue working to fix them. But those problems are ours to confront and resolve. If you do not like the current president, then do what democracy allows, organize, persuade people, and elect someone you believe will do better. At the same time, we should reflect on why we keep presenting ourselves on platforms that seem more interested in spectacle than in meaningful dialogue. Nigerians and Africans should focus more energy on building at home, strengthening institutions, scaling businesses, investing in industry, and improving lives. And let’s be honest, you would never see those same interviewers talk to someone like President Kagame in that tone or ask such flippant questions about righteousness. Coming from the West? No way. Mr. Daniel Bwala, please stop accepting those kinds of invitations. I genuinely don’t see the point.

Maybe you should go and read again what I wrote. I don’t know what you understand by sitting on the fence? I am not. I talked about knowing you because I lately avoid responding to burner account on the other end. So since I know you I have a good sense of who I am talking to. Once again next time. A sign of intelligence is accepting that people can have differing opinions from you. Incase you are asking again. Yes. That is what I got from the interview. There are so many things going on in Nigeria that could have been discussed but they spent the whole time trying to have a spokesperson eat his words, bringing up hearsay that have already gone through the courts. Common. You definitely don’t know how media works and that’s why they have given you something to chew on. Enjoy it.

Hahaha I just looked at your DP and realized I know you. You don’t want to have this conversation with me Toby. What do you mean by I am better than this? I said your Nation is being ridiculed by someone from a nation that is not any more righteous and you are asking me to have shame for using my own head to think and have my own opinion. You are being ridiculous bro. I thought you are more intelligent. Next time being intelligent also means leaving people be with their individual opinion. They don’t have to think like you. Infact you are being totally disrespectful and uncultured.

Please leave my timeline if you have nothing else to say. A lot of you will never learn until it’s late. I don’t discuss news and I’m not on anyone’s side. If you don’t understand what I wrote or you have not seen the interview, go and see it. And if you have seen the interview and still don’t understand it’s also fine. So where you are, please don’t come to me with “don’t be that guy”…I’m not one of you.

POPCENTRAL : explains Nigeria daily on Newsense!
Exactly 13 years ago today, Nigeria won the AFCON title! 🏆 Sunday Mba's goal was enough to see the Eagles win 1-0 against Burkina Faso. This was Nigeria's first win in 19 years. The team was led by the late Stephen Keshi, a legend who won the AFCON as a player and a coach. It was a big moment for Nigerian football! 🇳🇬

Really cool to see how Hilda Baci has entered the archive of Nigerian pop culture through music. Have you heard the song named after the GWR holder? From food to being permanently embedded in culture. A full-circle moment.

I actually think it fits. Coming from a strong Fuji influence, it makes sense. Fuji has always been eclectic, expressive, and parallel to hip-hop in its energy and attitude. If you look at it that way, the crossover is not surprising at all.

Contrary to what many people have come to believe, FESTAC ‘77 was not a waste. Spending on culture is never wasteful. As a matter of fact, Nigeria needs to host it again next year. My case for FESTAC ‘27 #TheCultureDesk
