ARTICLE | 260622 ENHYPEN Jungwon on Why He’s Looking Forward to This World Tour Jungwon, the "youngest leader" who clears his mind through long walks, carries one big dream. Looking into his eyes as he talks about how dreams should be as big as possible, you can feel how sincere he is. - Q: You had a photoshoot with Cartier today. What kind of jewelry or accessories do you usually wear? Jungwon: ENGENEs probably already know this, but when we first debuted, I hardly ever wore things like watches or rings. As time went on, I gradually became interested in them. Coincidentally, the first watch I ever bought was a Cartier Tank. So when I heard about today's photoshoot, I thought, "What a funny coincidence," and found it fascinating. - Q: What made you choose it as your first watch? Jungwon: I do not know much about the history or technical side of watches, but the design immediately caught my eye. It gave me that feeling of, "I have to buy this." It is not often that I become instantly drawn to something, whether it is an object or an opportunity, but when I do, I am the type who has to go for it. (laughs) - Q: How was today's photoshoot? Jungwon: I actually liked it because it turned out differently from what I expected. I thought it would have a neat and classic atmosphere, but the lighting, styling, and outfits all felt very youthful and trendy. Through this shoot, I realized that Cartier can also be expressed in this kind of mood. - Q: What was it like doing the shoot with Ni-ki? Jungwon: It was not our first time doing a photoshoot together. We did one about two years ago. But it was fun because it had been a while since the two of us, the "maknaez" (youngest members), worked together on a shoot. I'm only a year older than Ni-ki. Afterward, when we looked at the results, we even said to each other, "Don't you think our visuals match really well together?" - Q: I watched your Iceland vlog. After seeing it, I wanted to visit too. What made you decide to go all the way to Iceland? Jungwon: It was a family trip. We joined a package tour. Originally, we considered going to Hokkaido in Japan, but seeing the Northern Lights has always been on my bucket list, so we boldly decided on Iceland. - Q: Did you get to see the aurora you had dreamed of? Jungwon: I did see it. (laughs) But it was different from what I had imagined. In photos and videos, the colors look vivid and beautiful, with greens and purples. But when I saw it in person, it looked closer to a faint whitish color. Apparently, there is something called the "Kp index" when observing auroras, and if the number is low, that is how they appear. - Q: I know you enjoy walking. Did you spend time walking around Iceland too? Jungwon: Iceland was really cold, and it was very windy. In Korea, I sometimes walk for hours, but in Iceland, I mostly just took short walks around the area near our accommodation. - Q: Why do you enjoy walking so much? Jungwon: I organize my thoughts while I walk. There have been times when I walked for three hours straight. On average, I usually walk for about an hour to an hour and a half whenever I go out. I tend to change my routes often, but I especially like walking along the Han River. When I walk there, I get to see all kinds of people. There are families out walking with their young children, college students exercising together, and even couples arguing. I enjoy seeing those real slices of life. Oh, and one time I even ran into people from my company by chance. Another thing I love is seeing how the parks change with each season. - Q: No wonder you were chosen as an ambassador for the Seoul International Garden Show. Jungwon: I think I owe that to my parents for naming me Jungwon, which also means "garden." (laughs) When I first heard I had been selected as an ambassador, I thought it was really amusing. I remember thinking, "So my name can lead to opportunities like this too." I went to Seoul Forest for the poster shoot, and that was when I first realized just how huge it is. I'd love to visit again on my own when I have some free time. - Q: Do you only walk? Running is very popular these days. Jungwon: I run from time to time too. I even went running several times when I was in Japan. But when I am walking, I focus on walking, and when I am running, I focus on running. - Q: How far do you usually run? Jungwon: It depends on how I am feeling that day, but usually around 5 to 6 kilometers. - Q: May I ask about your pace? Jungwon: There are so many amazing runners these days that it is a little embarrassing to say, but I think I average somewhere between 4 minutes 30 seconds and 5 minutes per kilometer. I definitely slow down when the weather is very hot. - Q: Let's talk about ENHYPEN's world tour, "Blood Saga," which recently began. The first concert took place in Seoul on May 1. In the behind-the-scenes videos, you seemed to place a lot of importance on the opening show. Jungwon: That's right. There is a saying that getting started is half the battle. Maybe it is just my personal superstition, but if I start off on the wrong foot, I keep feeling anxious afterward. It makes me feel like I might repeat the same mistake in the same part again. Also, with world tours, the overall quality naturally improves as more shows are performed. The members and staff gain experience and become more skilled through repetition. So this time, I prepared with the mindset of, "Let's perform as if we've already completed a full round of the tour." I worked really hard. - Q: Specifically, what aspects were you trying to improve? Jungwon: Many people come to concerts because they want to feel the energy of the live atmosphere. So I spent a lot of time thinking about how to raise that excitement. In the past, I thought that if I was having fun, the audience would naturally have fun too. But after monitoring our performances, I realized that is not always the case. I worked on maintaining high energy while also staying aware enough to communicate with the fans rather than getting swept up in the excitement. Musically, we also created special concert arrangements. We refined the transitions so that the music would flow naturally from one song to the next without interruptions. I was really happy that ENGENEs noticed those details and responded with such enthusiastic support. - Q: It sounds like you're the type who carefully reviews and analyzes performances afterward. Jungwon: All of the members do it, and we also gather with our performance director and the A&R team that oversees our music. We always exchange feedback. We talk honestly about what worked well and what could have been better. The more we go through that process, the better the quality of the show becomes. It is especially important during "three-show" weekends like our recent Seoul concerts, where we perform on three consecutive days. - Q: Doesn't performing on consecutive days become physically exhausting? Jungwon: It depends on the setlist. This tour's setlist is not particularly demanding physically. Still, after performing for three days straight, I did find it a little difficult to get out of bed on the final morning. Interestingly, once I step on stage, I actually feel energized. I hate having regrets, so I always try to give my best in every moment so that I have nothing to look back on with regret. - Q: I heard this tour will also take you to South America. Jungwon: From what I have heard from senior artists, concerts in South America have an incredibly passionate atmosphere. The audience reactions are very intense too. Because of that, not only me but all the members are really excited. It is our first time touring there, and I have also heard that the venues are quite large. - Q: When you spoke with Esquire in 2022, ENHYPEN was just about to embark on its first world tour. What is different about Jungwon then and Jungwon now? Jungwon: Wow, time really flies. While touring, I have spent a lot of time thinking about my sense of responsibility toward the people who support us. I have experienced firsthand that there are so many people in this world who cheer for us and care about us even more than we do ourselves. Whenever I start feeling lazy, thinking about those people immediately wakes me up and motivates me again. - Q: Last year, you even performed at Coachella. Looking ahead, where and how would you like to showcase ENHYPEN's unique charm next? Jungwon: I have heard that dreams should be as big as possible. So if I am going to dream big, I hope the day comes when we can perform at the Super Bowl. Honestly, it feels almost unimaginable for a Korean artist to perform there. The chances seem incredibly slim. But unexpected things happen in life sometimes. If we keep working hard, maybe we can squeeze through that tiny needle's eye too. (laughs) - Q: What about musically? Jungwon: We are currently preparing our next album, so I cannot share many details yet. But we always strive to show new and challenging sides of ourselves. Because of the perception people have of idols, I think there are still many listeners who have never really explored our music. Personally, I have a lot of confidence in our songs. So I hope people will give them a chance and listen at least once. - Q: If you had to create an "Introduction to ENHYPEN" playlist, which songs would you choose? Jungwon: Oh, that sounds fun. First, I would definitely recommend Bite Me. Then I would suggest Still Monster. If you like those two, I think you would also enjoy 멀어 (Blind). Personally, I really love Big Girls Don't Cry, so I would strongly recommend that one as well. - Q: "Big Girls Don't Cry" is actually new to me. Jungwon: That is probably because it is a B-side from our most recent album. It is not the title track. But honestly, I loved it from the moment I heard the demo. I would not be exaggerating if I said it ranks among my top five favorite ENHYPEN songs of all time. The audience response when we performed it on stage was incredible too. I highly recommend it. - 🔗esquirekorea.co.kr/article/1904745 CARTIER PRINCES WONKI #WONKIforESQUIRE #CartierxENHYPEN #JUNGWON #NI_KI @ENHYPEN_members @ENHYPEN
