When people look at the erosion of freedom in Hong Kong the last several years and warn about this happening to Taiwan, it’s a reminder that our parents and grandparents remember authoritarian era Taiwan. The KMT under Chiang Kai-Shek massacred a generation of Taiwan’s leaders and intellectuals. My grandfather was a young journalist that fled to Thailand for several years. My mom’s childhood memories includes neighbors disappearing in the middle of the night. It’s why wanted to immigrate to America in the 70s when I was a toddler. Hong Kong used to be my favorite city since my first visit in 1995. It was a free and vocal society with an energy to it that’s no longer there. That Hong Kong only exists in the people who remember. Free thinking leads to people wanting freedom and living life without fear and that absolutely scares the shit out of insecure governments that are afraid of losing power. So they arrest people for selling books during the week of their book fair. They invite influencers and comedians to tap dance for social media. They throw money at international event organizers to host conferences and they silence critics by sending trolls to reply spam social media sites that they block their own citizens from using. But hey, how about that recent Pew report about countries that like China more than America. You’ll hear the think tanks, academics and China expert talking more about that because maintaining their access to China depends on it and no one wants to win that exit ban lottery on their next trip there.
