As the winter visitation season ends, spring plowing operations begin! To prepare for the upcoming peak season, our crews spend about 3 months plowing over 180 miles of park roads that have been compacted with a winter's worth of snow. Here's a peek at what our crews face while they get our roads ready for the busy summer season.

And that's a wrap! Another winter season in Yellowstone comes to an end. From today through mid-April, most park roads will be closed so that our staff can begin snow plowing operations. If you plan to visit us during the off-season (mid-March through April), keep in mind that there are very limited facilities and services, and the only road open for vehicle travel is the road between the park's North and Northeast entrances.

Remember, even though travel to the park’s interior closes today for the season, you can still view Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin all year through the park’s livestream webcam at yellowstone.org/old-faithful-s…. The webcam is made possible by our longtime partner, @CanonUSA.

In a brief flash of electric blue, we saw our first mountain bluebird of the year this week near Yellowstone’s north entrance! Though snow is on the ground in many parts of the park and we are sure to get more winter weather, the arrival of mountain bluebirds is one of the earliest signs of spring.

(News Release) On March 9, Yellowstone biologists working in the northern part of the park reported seeing the first grizzly bear of the spring season. The bear was observed in the backcountry scavenging on a bull bison carcass. Read more at go.nps.gov/26003

For the first time since 2020, Echinus Geyser (Norris Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park) is erupting! Caldera Chronicles has the details about the show. usgs.gov/observatories/… 📷1: Echinus Geyser, seen from above in a photo taken by a research balloon in 2005. The acidic nature of the water results in unusual chemistry, with the red colors caused by iron, aluminum, and arsenic compounds. 📷2: Echinus Geyser in eruption on October 24, 2017. March 1, 1872. An act of Congress. A new idea. A place set aside for the benefit and enjoyment of the people. 154 years later — still wild. Still inspiring. Still Yellowstone.
