Privacy is a protocol-level problem, not an add-on In most blockchains today, privacy is treated as something layered on top of the base system. Zero-knowledge proofs and Layer 2 solutions have made impressive technical progress, but they often come with real trade-offs. Performance overhead increases, developer complexity rises, and many applications struggle to move beyond narrow, specialized use cases. Seismic starts from a different assumption. Instead of adding privacy later, it embeds privacy directly into the Layer 1 protocol. Secure hardware, such as Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), is used to encrypt global state and protect memory access during smart contract execution. At the same time, the system preserves an EVM-like environment. Developers can continue using familiar tools, while privacy becomes a default property rather than an optional feature. Built for financial infrastructure, not just crypto Seismic is not positioning itself as a blockchain solely for DeFi. Its scope extends to real financial use cases such as payroll, expense management, and lending. In these settings, privacy cannot be considered independently from regulation. Any system that hopes to support real-world finance must be able to address both. This is why Seismic is designed with transaction screening and reporting in mind at the protocol level. Rather than aiming for full anonymity, it focuses on enabling privacy alongside compliance. That balance closely mirrors the kind of financial infrastructure that has historically attracted long-term institutional capital, including investments backed by a16z. A privacy model that fits the U.S. regulatory landscape In the United States, expectations around data protection are increasing, while requirements for transparency and traceability remain firmly in place. Fully transparent systems are difficult to deploy in financial contexts, but fully anonymous ones face even greater resistance. Seismic’s selective disclosure model targets this middle ground. Data can remain private by default, yet be revealed or proven when necessary. Viewed through this lens, a16z’s decision to continue investing after the seed round becomes easier to understand. Seismic offers a privacy model that appears realistically deployable within the U.S. regulatory environment. A foundation for scaling real-world assets Real-world asset tokenization is frequently discussed, but rarely implemented at meaningful scale. Privacy is one of the main reasons. Institutions are unlikely to participate in systems where asset structures and contractual details are fully exposed on a public ledger. Seismic is built around encrypted state and access control as first-class design assumptions, while still maintaining EVM compatibility.
