@griffonboi imo the ftz is just an easy thing to blame for overcrowding when there are other factors that have a more significant detrimental impact on tram capacity.

The free tram zone isn't the problem, people riding only a stop or two in the CBD were much less likely to touch on anyway
More capacity is definitely needed however, as walking is faster in some cases while crush loaded trams are dwelling for ages getting people on and off.

People tweet like this without realising that one of the big failures of free PT is the Melbourne free tram zone Overcrowding is rife because lazy passengers would rather catch a tram 400 metres than walking because there is zero price signal their trip is stupid

I took the 605 from the city to ANZAC. Not busy at all and incredibly slow. One wonders if maybe we should just terminate it at ANZAC, this route is so unreliable. Also Queen St needs permanent bus lanes
