These findings reinforce how integrated molecular and genomic surveillance can strengthen early outbreak detection, distinguish co-circulating arboviruses, and improve public health response. Grateful to all co-authors, collaborators, & the dedicated field and laboratory teams!

Importantly, we also detected a small number of dengue and probable CHIKV/DENV co-infections, highlighting the clinical overlap between arboviral diseases and the importance of accurate laboratory confirmation.

I’ve officially started Week 1 of 6 of the Biology of Vector-Borne Diseases Online Course at the University of Idaho after being awarded a full scholarship (USD 1,500), funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases Program. @ui_IHHE

This work highlights the importance of expanded surveillance and comprehensive diagnostic approaches in regions with co-circulating flaviviruses, especially where symptom-based clinical surveillance may miss asymptomatic exposure.

Although most infections are asymptomatic and surveillance is limited, our findings provide updated evidence of possible WNV exposure in populations from Papua and North Kalimantan, suggesting underrecognized or silent viral circulation.
