RE usage rates remain low for all ranked companies compared to their global competitors. GDS is the only major Chinese tech company reported a RE use ratio above 30% in 2021. We need all tech companies to commit to 100% renewable energy across the supply chain by 2030. [6/6]

Tencent is the only ranked company that has included supply chain emissions (Scope 3) in its carbon neutrality pledge. 4 out of 5 ranked companies have not disclosed Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions data. [5/6]

“Ultimately, we need all of China’s major technology firms to achieve 100 percent renewable energy use and carbon neutrality across the value chain by 2030. This would lend strong momentum to China’s national climate commitments" @yrq124 scmp.com/business/artic…

China’s top data center operator GDS commits to reaching 100% RE and carbon neutral by 2030! A clear signal to its downstream IT giants like Alibaba, Tencent & Baidu, a 100% RE commitment by 2030 must be a core piece of any corporate carbon neutrality strategy.

Microsoft bought forest offsets that are now burning... It's a sad but timely lesson for Chinese tech peers, radical emissions cuts and transition to 100% RE is the key, and relying on carbon offsets is not. ft.com/content/3f89c7…

But to date only 2 major Chinese internet companies have committed to 100% renewable energy use. Industry giants like Alibaba and GDS must pledge to achieve full-scope carbon neutrality and 100% renewable energy use by 2030.

Our latest report finds that energy consumption from China’s internet industry (data centers & 5g) is on track to rise 289% through 2035. CO2 emissions from the sector are projected to keep growing through 2035, long after emissions from other sectors in China peak.

However, only two major Chinese tech companies have recorded renewable energy usage rates that are higher than 3%: Chindata (51%) and Baidu (9%). China's internet sector is powered primarily by coal, and the industry's energy consumption continues to rise. [6/7]

The good news is that 13 of China’s 22 biggest tech companies have now begun to actively procure renewable energy, compared to just 8 companies in 2019. [5/7]
