Her name was Megumi Yokota. On November 15, 1977, she disappeared on her way home from school. Her parents launched the largest missing person search in the history of Niigata Prefecture. There were no leads. The police assumed she had been run over or fallen into the sea. For 20 years, her family had no idea what had actually happened to her. Then in 1997, a former North Korean spy defected and revealed the truth. Megumi had been kidnapped by North Korean agents lying in wait on the beach. She was thrown into a boat and taken directly to North Korea, where she was forced to teach the Japanese language and Japanese customs to North Korean spies training to infiltrate Japan. Witnesses said she spent her first days in the boat screaming for her mother and clawing at the walls of the ship until her fingernails bled. Megumi was not alone. Between 1977 and 1983, North Korean agents systematically kidnapped at least 17 Japanese civilians from beaches, streets, and even European countries. In September 2002, Kim Jong II personally admitted to the kidnappings in a face-to-face meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister and apologized. Five victims were returned to Japan. North Korea claimed that Megumi had killed herself in 1994 and returned a set of cremated remains as proof. Japanese DNA testing revealed the remains belonged to somebody else entirely. Megumi's mother, Sakie Yokota, has spent the last 49 years campaigning for her daughter's return. She met with US President George W. Bush in 2006. She has spoken before the United Nations. She has never stopped fighting. Megumi's father d*ed in 2020 still searching for his daughter. Megumi would be 61 years old today. Her mother is now 90 years old and still believes she is alive somewhere inside North Korea.
