If you feel unsure how to tune your vocals for your cover (if ur a little tone deaf like me hehe), using a reference can help! I like using Logic's built-in stem splitter to isolate the acapella, but any can work ^w^

If you've used After Effects for 5 years, you've probably spent a full work week just selecting layers. Not animating. Selecting. So I built Picky: stupid fast layer selection by type, name, or pattern. Completely free.

Thank you, everyone, for responding to the census and for taking a look at the results Though it was hard, wading through some of the numbers, I'm feeling more motivated than ever to be doing youtaite things. I'll be looking forward to y'alls #youtaiteworks too~

This approach is tried and true but there's a variation I prefer and now use 90% of the time: Cut in Context -Identify the general problem area -Make a cut (usually Q of 2 to 4 and around -6dB) -While listening to the track in context of the mix, sweep until the problem dips or disappears It's ok to bring the track up in volume to hear more clearly. I usually have one hand on the volume fader and the other on the EQ so I can compensate as I sweep. It also helps to sweep high to low, then low to high to really pin point the offending frequency -Refine your Q and gain reduction, aiming for the tightest Q and least gain to fix said problem, and check track volume Be sure to listen to how the cut affects other elements. Cutting mud or bad resonances on one track will reveal more detail and clarity in others Why is this method better? Not all resonances are bad. Kill all the resonances and you kill the music. Cutting in context, you realize certain things heard in solo actually give it life in the full mix. By cutting you hear in real time the unmasking of tracks that were blending together, giving you more clarity Boosting temporarily makes things sound worse. If you mix into bus processing, as I do, boosting can cause your compression/saturation/reverb/etc to react negatively further confusing your EQ decision And if you're live recording a band, they probably won't appreciate you cranking up the harshest frequencies while they're rehearsing. The incredible NYC producer/engineer I worked for would make constant cuts and adjustments during the very first rehearsal take of the session. By the end of the run through he'd have the band perfectly dialed in without anyone ever noticing. Musicians loved that they could come in and just start playing, without any laborious process for setting up and getting sounds

✨🌊#nadoProfessor tip of the day ✨🌊 Some commonly given advice for EQ is, "Boost and sweep until you hear a problem, then cut at that frequency." And that is NOT correct—but just barely! The issue with this method is that ANY frequency sounds bad if boosted enough, so you'll just end up cutting a bunch of stuff that YOU made artificially problematic in the first place. Instead, LISTEN FIRST to the source with no EQ applied. Identify the problem areas with the tone, and only THEN see if a boost in a particular region makes the problem worse. If it does, then you've correctly identified a real problem and where it lives—go ahead and cut there. See you in the next tip!

My ears can be a bit sensitive to consonants, especially S sounds (also called sibilance)! You could add a de-esser in the mix, but that can be inconsistent. That's why I like to go through the vocal in RX and adjust each sibilant manually ^w^ Here are some methods I use :3

Waves just released Curves Resolve and just like I thought it's a plugin dedicated to unmasking It's free for the next 48 hours only so get it asap Some of it's unique features are both dynamic and steady EQ, can be used wideband or target specific ranges, and has some sort of intelligent sidechaining I'm a big fan of Curves Equator so I have high expectations for this one
