The knowledge of knowing things are seriously wrong and rather than looking for a way to reverse the wish but alter it to make it less frightening is problematic

That logic works up until he realizes the wish did work. When he calls the customer service line, he’s asking to “alter” the wish, not cancel it like he should. He still wants to be with Nikki and have Nikki love him. Even though she has shown she is trapped and asked for him to kill her. Now, I don’t think he’s entirely malicious about it. I think he’s just dumb and doesn’t actually realize the full extent of what he did to her.
