I agree, but I don’t think @AfreenFatima136 is an example of someone who has been intimidated into silence. If anything, she embodies the opposite. She has lived through the demolition of her home, the imprisonment of her father, years of displacement, surveillance, and an extraordinary degree of public scrutiny yet her voice remains intact. Visibility is not the only measure of resistance. My grief is for the many many Muslim women who have been pushed out of public life not only by the state’s repression and attacks by the right wing but also by relentless character assassination, misogyny, and orchestrated online witch hunts, from some Muslim men especially here. These attacks are a way of warning women that they could speak, but only if they stayed within limits these men had set for them. Muslim women have never lacked courage. They have been among the clearest and loudest voices against injustice in this country. What they have lacked is the collective protection and solidarity they deserved. That is on all of us. And Muslim women are not going anywhere.
